You just *know* someone is going to do their very best to absolutely *LEVEL* Sid in the first 6 weeks of the season, if only because of jealousy over both his talent and his contract. And I will be cheering when it happens. It doesn't matter, some company was willing to insure the contract so the team would only be out a chunk of that money. That insurance company on the other hand is gambling that he is past his concussion issues.

I know nothing about the contract goings-on in hockey, or how their CBA works, but I just saw the Kings gave their goalie a 10-year extension on his contract, which brings to a few questions:

Is it common for NHL teams to give players those many years on their deals?
And how often do players actually play out the entirety of the contract w/ that team?
Is the money guaranteed, or can teams release a player like in the NFL, effectively terminating the contract?

Now that teams know they can front load the contracts to keep the cap hit low and have ample opportunities later to be rid of them (bury player in the minors, trade to a team that has cap space to spare but don't need to pay that amount in actual salary) it is the norm for all star players rather than the exception. The money is guaranteed (even if they're in the minors) unless the player retires or refuses to report to the team.

I hate the contracts, since I would rather have the cap hit reflect the actual salary, but it is what it is. It helps the big market teams but if the alternative is just letting the owners pocket the money when they reach the cap I guess it's the lesser of two evils.

Don't know the details of the Crosby deal yet, but the Quick contract is definitely front loaded.

Can't be as bad as that original Kovalchuk deal. (Come on....until he's 44?) The Brad Richards deal is bad too (making $12 million, cap hit under $7? Final 3 years at $1 million?)

I'm sure there's an injury based retirement clause in there though. If his symptoms keeps him from playing more than 4 years, I'm sure they won't keep paying him $8.7 million to do be retired for 8.

I would put Merkin either equal to or a little over crosby. His grit, size and skill make him incredibly difficult to get the puck away from, he can throw the body and do damage, and this year he completely carried that team. I mean, he turned James Neal into a 40 goal scorer while putting 50 of his own up. He's more durable than sid, and has shown over the past 2 seasons that he can be a leader if the team needs him to be. A 1.2 PPG is nothing to scoff at as well.

If you look at talent alone, I'd go Malkin, Stamkos, Crosby in my top 3 with Giroux just outside of that. But my point is that talent means nothing if the guy is going to get hurt and miss games.

No, the rest of the world uses real money while the NFL uses monopoly money.

Every athlete is potentially one play away from retirement. All of them. The rewards of locking Crosby up long term far outweigh the risks. The only real risk for the Penguins franchise itself is paying out all that money, but they'd make that back one way or another anyway, regardless of whether Crosby's in the lineup or not.
