I have to agree, I mean, he was in jail for a misdemeanor possession charge, so, it wasn't like he was some hard felon in for years. This might have been something he'd have done outside of jail as well.... probably had some mental issues.

I've had one (female) try to cut her breasts off with sharpened spork, another (male) try to hang himself with a noose made from his own clothing. Had another one open a vein with a little ID badge clip. The list goes on. Take away everything they have and put them in a paper gown and they will smash their head into the wall until you ask them nicely to stop. If they went to make an attempt (or just cry out for help/attention), they will do it, no matter what you do to intervene.

They teach us that people facing long sentences, etc are more likely to make an attempt. Doesn't mean it is always the case. The three I mentioned were all short timers. One was only a day or two from going home. Another was within a week or so. Sometimes the fear of leaving prison is worse than going to prison to begin with.

Completely agree, it's amazing what an offender can do when they want to harm themselves.

People think the stuff Macgyver or the A-Team can make is incredible, leave an inmate alone for twenty minutes with virtually nothing, you'll come back to search the cell and find weapons and tools made from stuff you didn't think possible.

Man the weird shiat I've found shaking down cells, it will amaze people.

Sorry, but I'm not buying this story. Either the cops beat this guy or some other inmate killed him. They are manufacturing this plastic spoon stabbing story to prevent their jail from being investigated for failure to protect inmates.

Goes to show - if someone is knowingly being raped against their will in prison (and we call it PMITA prison for a reason), we know that we're submitting prisoners to cruel and unusual punishment. There's no way around that.
Also, prisoners are constantly on suicide watch, citizens are not. Anyone heard of principle of least eligibility?
Our prison system is archaic and needs a major overhaul before it starts costing some serious class action money.
