My father still gets legitimately pissed about that to this day and he isn't the angry type. Just a truly ugly incident. Dave Winfield is a cowardly piece of shiat, as are the other Minnesota players and fans who took turns having their fun.

All of these people telling the news media that he was this "good guy". shiat. He was a POS.
But worse than him by far was Jim Behagen, who ran off of the bench and started stomping Witte in the face while he laid there helpless. Why he didn't go straight to jail for doing that I will never know.

I only found out about this story a few years back (on FARK). I was a Winfield fan, but now, fark him. I hope he drops dead along with his thug buddy.

Count me as another that had never heard of this incident. WTF, Minnesota?

They should have cancelled the rest of Minnesota's season. FANS getting involved? That's pretty shiatty.

If a school can't control its players and its fans from brutally assaulting the other team, then they need to have their season put down.

I sure hope if something like that happened again the powers that be would have the wisdom to wipe the rest of the season and make the team forfeit all wins for that year. It would be the first time that forfeiting wins made a real difference, too.

Actually, after this incident (and the lack of significant discipline by the Big Ten), OSU coach Fred Taylor was never really the same. He ended up retiring a couple of years later.

Years after the event, Witte and Taylor began exchanging letters, then e-mails. Nine years ago, Witte cashed in some frequent flier miles and flew to the Twin Cities. He spent two days in Taylor's Plymouth home, burying the past, building a friendship. Taylor, Turner and Witte talked. And they went to Taylor's basement and watched tapes of the incident.
"We watched it a few times," Witte said. "I had a video that was different from what [Taylor] had. We were silent the first time through. As we continued to watch, we started our conversation.''
They talked about their feelings, how some friends and perhaps former teammates let the bad feelings fester.

I expect not. But it takes a lot more balls to forgive someone for what they did to you, in person, than to sit around and let that hate fester pointlessly for years and years. And in the end, that brave act made all their lives better.
