My position could totally be replaced by a robot. In a former life, I'd have been drawing up proposals on exactly how that would work. Since I'm a useless sack of crap because I don't have a degree, I spend my days farking and surfing other areas of the internet. The only thing I've learned in five years: The comments are the most entertaining part of articles.

Right now, no my position could not be replaced by a robot. In the future? Sure.

The better question is whether unemployment is here to stay. When robots can do your job, what are you going to do? And what if the jobs that require actual human thought start to be taken over by robots? It sounds far-fetched right now but 20 years from now, I'm not so sure.

People really should begin thinking about how AI will shift the political structure globally. Does capitalism even make sense when the robots are doing practically everything? Is some sort of indefinite social welfare going to be the norm? Is communism better in a society in which very little work is actually required? Will we all just sit and fark all day?

The difference between what I do and what artificial intelligence would do is that AI wouldn't goof off on the web all day.

I like to think of it this way. I'm not paid for the 99% of my job that could be done by a robot, I'm paid for the 1% of my job that requires an expert with an appreciation for pressure and time constraints.

When there are robots that can write new software I figure we'll be beyond economies.

So, I should be employed until we reach some kind of utopia or Skynet becomes self aware.

Robot? You wish.

I used to work at a company that made use of Cyc. Doug Lenat was on our board of directors. Smart dude. At that time (late 1990s) hardware technology wasn't at a place where using the full ontology or inference engine was feasible, but the capabilities of it were really cool. I always wondered what it could do today when CPU, memory, and storage are all much cheaper and faster.

Worked for Romney. :D

My thought is that if your job is repetitive and rarely has any challenges (like the data entry I used to do), you will inevitably be replaced by either a machine or a program.

Nowadays I write the programs though, so I'll probably be one of the last ones out, just before the artists.


And yea, we're going to have a serious problem when there's only jobs enough to keep half the population occupied, and they don't feel like paying for the other half to be on welfare. Especially since that'd be the least educated/hardworking/generally useful half.

Hey, I got some "regular expressions" for you.

As someone who regularly replaces people with robots, allow me to mention that humans are not yet out of the loop (so to speak). There's still a great deal of material handling, cleaning, programming, and maintenance that we're just not automating yet. We should, but we aren't. We're getting better at optical recognition, so it's not that far away.
