Mr. McPeanut: (snip) Well that was suprisingly informative. I didn't expect a response at all. I use Lactase caplets whenever I eat something that has milk, cheese or other forms of lactose "contamination". Unfortunately they get pricey after a while (doesn't help that I don't have a good guide to how many FCCLU i need per amount of food, so i may be taking more than i need), and it doesn't remove the effects entirely so i still have to pace my dairy intake. Also Soy milk replacement tastes terrible, and Almond milk, while palatable, has no notable nutritive value. At least i can eat cereal. |

I'm training to be a dietitian, so I like to talk about stuff like this :P Unfortunately I don't know much about lactase pill dosing. Have you tried Lactaid brand milk? It's regular milk, they've just added the lactase enzymes like in those caplets to it. It tastes a little sweeter than regular milk, since glucose is sweeter than lactose, but other than that it's the same. I don't know if it's available in all fat percents, though, I only know for sure that they have skim. Yeah, milk alternatives are touch and go, some people never find one they like. Though I wouldn't say NO nutritive value for almond/rice/coconut milk, since while they lack the protein of cow and soy milk they DO provide calcium and vitamin D, which are what makes the dairy group "special." And in the case of almond milk you're getting some pretty healthy fats as well. |
