I think the moral of the story is, work for your college education, but if an opportunity drops into your lap, don't pass it by just to get the degree.

Yeah, except you won't have a degree to utilize to eventually dig your way out of that hole. At least if you have some college experience you have a higher potential to get a decent career. By starting a business that is statistically very likely to fail, all you have the ability to say later is "I got suckered by the American Dream... here's your fries." For the rest of your life. Your experience is worth exactly the same as every other fool that thought they could run their own business, and they will instantly pass you up to get some younger kid with a college degree.

Maybe you're just not noticing all the university graduate rings on cashiers. Not that there's any shame in working minimum wage jobs, but the idea a degree always, or even most of the time, leads to a high paying career is a fairy tale to keep kids lining up to be shackled with debt. The majority of graduates end up working jobs completely unrelated to their degrees in order to pay off their student loans.

Reed's a good school. The thing is, 100% of the people who drop out of Reed to so to spend more time getting high. On the other hand, 99% of the people who drop out of Stanford also do so to spend more time getting high. The difference is in the 1% who drop out of college to run a business.

Yeah idiot article writer, but the point is not "Become the CEO of a tech company" since obviously they won't hire you unless you have degrees and connections.

The point is to START your own company so you can be the CEO. Which is exactly what Jobs, Gates, Zuckerberg, Ellison and Dell did.

They myth that College Degrees are required to make money in life is perpetuated by College Grads that are deep in debt and cannot find a job in their major. This lack of finding a job is never due to the major being bullshiat, or the grad being a douchebag, but instead because the grad hasn't had enough schooling. It's a vicious cycle for those stuck in it.

College just specializes your knowledge in a particular area. Sometimes to the point of harming a persons common sense.

Degree's are handy. For some things they might even be necessary. They won't get you a job alone though. The guy with the high school diploma who knows his shiat will always end up ahead of the guy with the degree who doesn't know anything.

My advice?
Learn a trade. Get certified in it.
Be the the best at your job.
Start at the bottom and work up. If you're clever and the best at what you do, or even just clever, you'll get to the top.
