Greven went inside and retrieved the knife, and then "swung it wildly, nearly missing her and her bike."

So he hit her. A near miss is a hit.

"Today is a good day to die. I'm not going back to jail, someone is going to die,"

And promptly followed her into a jail. (Okay fine, not a real jail, but they still have holding cells)

Of course you have to stop chasing her, it's in the rules. Now if someone tags her out, then you can start chasing again.

So when you hear that two airplanes had a near miss, you assume they hit each other?

Why not just use her name? "The alleged victim" is such an awkward construction, and in this case "alleged" is just a bad choice of words.

In my games, the only rule is that there is no knife swinging on holy ground.

If your endoskeleton is a hyperalloy combat chasis then maybe you can take on a whole police station but you might not actually have a girlfriend. Since terminators don't bleed much when they're cut I'm guessing they don't have enough blood pressure to get it up.

Exactly what I was thinking/came here to say. WTF is wrong with this wench? I know TROs aren't made of kevlar or some super secret futuristic protective bubble, but having one could keep him in jail longer when he pulls future shenanigans. If he gets out of jail before she gets smart and just moves.

Because not using her name is precisely the intention of choosing such a mangled term. Most jurisdictions go out of their way to protect the identity of - if you'll excuse me - alleged victims of domestic and sexual assault, especially if they're children. There's a lot of reasons for doing so, most based sadly on how real cases worked out.

BurnShrike: So he hit her. A near miss is a hit.

You're using the wrong definition of 'near'.

1 at or to a short distance away; nearby : a bomb exploding somewhere near | [ comparative ] she took a step nearer.
2 a short time away in the future : the time for his retirement was drawing near.
3 [as submodifier ] almost : a near perfect fit.

You're assuming the use is as a submodifier, meaning almost. However, the primary use of the word means a short distance away. A near miss means the objects were close to each other when they missed, not that it was almost a miss.

Not only this, but the guy was denied bail. She would have had to come back every few months to keep the restraining order and this guy isn't going anywhere. The restraining order didn't stop this guy from hunting her down with a knife into a police station. If that didn't stop him what are the chances that a legal order is going to do it?

3 [as submodifier ] almost : a near perfect fit.

This is the context the word was used. It the example it to mean "close to or almost". So a near perfect fit could be said as it was almost perfect. A "near miss" then could be said as an "almost missed" therefor he almost missed her but did not, so he hit her.

It does seem to have that affect; but it's still an important part of the process. The cops come to you quicker when you have to call them and the consequences for violating them tack on for of an appropriate sentence, especially if they're on probation or parole for an assault against you. I really want to know this woman's reasoning for not renewing. I don't farking understand.

Dumb biatch probably deserved the thumping.

First of all she had a restraining order on this guy so what does the dumb wench do? Why she takes a bike ride over to the guys house... How much you want to bed she taunted the guy from the street, and provoked a man she was scared enough to file a court order against. Fricken half whit "alleged victim" my ass. If this guy didn't kill her the next one she taunts into a frenzy will.

Hold on a minute subby. In Wisconsin (in Fox Lake, I believe), there was a man who chased his wife into the police station and killed her. Probably didn't help that the police station was closed. And, in small towns here in Wisconsin, if you beat your spouse, they will separate you and give you the cooling off period, especially if you know the cop. It feels like domestic violence intervention is not a high priority here. Not many women's shelter unless you live in an urban area.

/Hate the small town-ness mentality (administratively speaking)
//Love the low crime in smalltownville. the worst problem that I've had is getting tepee'd

I don't give a fark about a restraining order. If I'm in love with a woman, then no stupid piece of bureaucratic shiat paper is going to keep me away from her. I've found that women get overwhelmed with all the attention I want to give them -- calling them to see where they are, testing them to make sure they're faithful, toughening them up emotionally and physically. Sometimes they just need to get away for a little while, which makes my cabin upstate a perfect place for them to unwind. Don't get me wrong - I'm not some sort of possessive maniac. If she wants to leave, and proves it to me, then I will let her go, though no one will ever love her and she's going to be miserable without me.

In this usage they're almost exactly the same thing. Example "I hit deep into the eight point ring, nearly missing the gold." You're confusing the use of nearly which in this case means "closely" rather than "almost."

No one noticed this yet?

Officer Raymond Therrien reported seeing the 42-year-old woman being "chased frantically" toward the department entrance by a man later identified as Constantine Greven, 40, of 26 Washington St.

and

The woman told police she had been riding her bike down Washington Street when she noticed Greven, with whom she had an "on and off" two-year relationship

She waited patiently on her bike while this guy runs into the house to rummage through his kitchen to find a knife. Yaaaa right.

Hope this guy gets a good Lawyer, and his neighbors come forward about this chick. No way she is innocent in all this. You don't accidentally ride up to your violent, ex-con, ex-boyfriends house on your bike and innocently stop to hang out and wait to be innocently chased into a police station.
