She was a long shot to begin with. Frankly I'm amazed it was as close as it was.

Also...damn she sexy.

I'll admit, I got sick of hearing about her and wanted to see her get beat. I felt bad for her though when she looked shocked. I think she was more shocked about finishing 4th than about not making the team...

on the plus side, this time someone else is going to have to sleep with the coach to get on the relay...

And you had to stay in the pool a bit longer than you'd planned? I've been there...

Didn't she miss a gold medal in 2008 by 1/100 of a second?

Good for her for her career achievements, and for trying one last time.

Why would a swimmer need knee surgery? Shoulder surgery I could understand, but knees? Or was the problem unrelated to swimming?

Several swimmers that I knew had knee problems, though they were primarily breaststrokers and needed it because the kick in that stroke puts more strain on the ligaments. I'd imagine that if I kept swimming hardcore until I turned 40, I would need a similar procedure.

In the pool, Torres appeared to pass the torch, as she hugged Hardy and Joyce, congratulating them on their one-two finish.

She's not only a gorgeous, accomplished athlete, she's a class act as well.

I was rooting for her.

She sat out the 96 Atlanta Games, and 04 Athens Games. At 45, she STILL has it, in my opinion at least.

/NONE of the other swimmers in the race were ALIVE when she first won gold.

I know she STILL holds the record in 50 free... but that always seemed like a weird event for a 45 year old to enter into.

You can always maintain endurance if you train good enough... but speed is something age always takes away no matter how hard you try.

Also... why did she only try 1 event? She seems pretty capable of doing more than that.

/Impressive she only missed it by 9/100s of a second.

Breaststroke. Yep.

She's always been a class act and a top competitor....from way back in Westchester YMCA age-grouper days.
