As long as they keep classic.wunderground.com up, I will have no complaints.

I noticed recently weather.com did some SEO and if you google "area weather", weather.com gets the top result not weatherunderground. It annoys me for some reason.

/weather.com doesn't even have a radar map "above the fold" on their page, fark them

wunderground is my main weather source, with TWC as a backup. I'm hoping they don't screw with wunderground, it's an excellent resource as is.

Agreed with everyone in here. I like pulling up all the different radars when storms are about. That and the Wunderblog is good reading.

Oh, CSB time:

Back when I was a customer service rep for SBC DSL I took an inbound call to help restore service for one of the seven founders of Wunderground. I don't remember which one it was but I remember him mentioning it off hand and I raved about his site to him and thanked him for it. He was real cool about it. Then I fixed his DSL and he thanked me. (swoon: no homo)

/CSB over

Yeah, I've been using it since it was a telnet connection to umich. The only gripe I have with it is that their wind speeds are consistently off by -5.

The Weather Channel is committed to keeping the Weather Underground brand and the web site in its current form.

The plan is to make both wunderground.com and weather.com stronger, by sharing content and infrastructure. Many Weather Underground features, such as our Personal Weather Station data, WunderMap, and my blog, are scheduled to also appear on the weather.com web site in the coming months.

My blog's main home will continue to be wunderground.com, and I have been asked to continue to write the same variety of science-based posts on hurricanes, extreme weather, and climate change that I've provided since 2005.

All this means that wunderground.com as we know it will be cannibalized and it's just a matter of how fast the bleeding out occurs.

I'm sort of bummed out. Wunderground has been an excellent source for years. And their app always seemed more accurate than the HTC Widgets that use TWC and AccuWeather.

This. Also it looks good on my phone.

I have a degree in Meteorology and have preferred Weather Underground in the past, but I like the new NOAA page really well.

I also have liked Weather Underground's radar and use that, especially the local view on my phone. It also updates with new images faster than NOAA's own radar site.

I like wunderground, but calling your weather website the "weather underground" never seemed like a good idea.

It seems like someone must have heard the term and liked the sound of it, but no one actually looked into it.

Exactly my reaction to it. Who would wittingly name their organization after a violent radical group?

Personally, I still use wunderground but rely on Oklahoma's mesonet.org. A few other states have mesonets as well, but I'm not familiar with their web sites.

They probably did focus testing and realized only 1/100 people had actually heard of the prior group and it was an "acceptable risk". Or, they were negativland fans..

That was before 2008 and palling around with bill Ayers but I digress. I love severe weather and here in Florida we get a lot of it. Wunderground was my go to site whenever warnings go up. I read Dr Masters regularly when tropical systems are about. I hope TWC doesn't corporatize it to much but who am I kidding. Good on them for making some coin though. I wont fault them for that.

For current weather I use http://www.imapweather.com/

The fullscreen version really kicks ass and has live storm chasers you can click and watch.

Really entertaining when you see dozens of those little cars moving towards one location.

It was named as a joke by Jeff Masters when he was a grad student (at Michigan, where the radical group also originated). It grew out of a telnet service before the Web. The name stuck after it became popular.

Wunderground has the best predictions, but probably the worst web design of any site I use regularly. Maybe their newfound corporate "synergies" will help bring the site into 2012, but I doubt it.

Why the fark is it called IMAP Weather if it doesn't provide an email server?! Makes about as much sense as calling your ice cream joint "Bob's Mufflers."

Can anyone recommend an Android app that will actually wake up a phone and make a sound when my area gets a severe weather alert?

I have an Accueather app that was supposed to do that, but if failed last Friday. Had my phone out and on the table, and no warning about the derecho. And so I walked right out of a restaurant into it.

/fark you, Accuweather

The new WEA/CMAS alert system will handle a good portion of those needs if you have a phone that supports/will support it after firmware updates.

I'm looking forward to their availability when iOS 6 is released.

WU is now owned by TWC which is in turn owned by Bain Capital which is in turn a sizable portion of Mitt Romney's portfolio.

I'll not be giving them a dime. Time to build my own system with cron, mapserver, and a shiatload of php.

Good point.

I only use it for current weather around the country or for eyes on the ground SHTF stuff. Though I think one of their mobile apps has alerts. For Alerts and everything else its weather.com or accuweather.

The only problem I have with Weather.com is it takes forever to load half the time.

I'm wondering if what TWC really wants is access to all the PWS's. That could help them fill in empty data spots when providing current conditions.

Other than that, the only motivation I can see is to put an internet competitor out of business, which hardly seems worth the effort unless they're trying to radically change their business model.

We're in a weather-sensitive business, especially this time of the year. I've been telling people for years that I check 5 weather services every day and one of them is always right. The problem? I never know which one it will be. Lately, we've had the best results/luck with NOAA/NWS for short term and Accuweather for long-term.

Android simple weather alert

Has 30+ kind of warnings and will override haptic and sound settings for phone. Even wakes me up, which is rare.
