Jimbo has 27,000 cases of dementia? Guess that explains some of the talk pages on Wikipedia.

Ok serious comment time: Crazy is traditionally seen as crazy, not a medical issue to be dealt with but a contagion to be shunned. So of course nobody's going to doctors asking to be declared insane.

That and dementia itself is not compatible with caring for yourself.

Wait until they start looking in cases of bipolar disorder. They'll end up diagnosing the entire population

I was in a pub last Saturday night.
Had a few.... and noticed two very large women at the bar.
They both had strong accents so I asked...
"Hey, are you two ladies from Scotland?"

One of them chirped... "It's WALES, you friggin' idiot!"

So, I immediately apologized and said...
"I'm sorry. Are you two whales from Scotland?"

That's all I remember.

It seemed like an awfully high rate of dementia. Is there some genetic component that makes this population more vulnerable to dementia than the world population on average?

Heh. I'm reminded of an interview with Richard D. James when he talks of the time Madonna wanted to work with him.

"I wanted her to do these animal impressions," he says. "I had a whole list of them."

(Pretty sure the interview I read was from this edition of NME; but it's not surprising that the media recycle their press releases branded as interviews.)

Posh Naranek: Ok serious comment time: Crazy is traditionally seen as crazy, not a medical issue to be dealt with but a contagion to be shunned.

Define "crazy". And how it's contagious.

There may be a genetic factor in bi-polar disorder; Stephen Fry, who is bi-polar did a documentary for the Beeb on BPD, in which he interviewed the chef Rick Stein. As I recall, Rick's father made himself an hero due to his manic depression. And Rick himself is bi-polar.

I've read some of Fry's autobiographies and I get the impression that while the depressive episodes are dismal, the manic episodes make up for that., at least for him and some of his friends.

So of course nobody's going to doctors asking to be declared insane. That and dementia itself is not compatible with caring for yourself.

I'm not sure if his documentaries make it to the US, but Louis Theroux did 2 documentaries for teh beeb recently, under the "Extreme Love" strand. I saw most of the first one, which was about autistic children. The second was about Alzheimers, and I couldn't bear to sit down and watch a documentary about what many of us will eventually face.

/The Alzheimers one was filmed in Arizona,
//Which explains Sheriff Joe.

Now be careful, I posted on reddit that Welsh and Klingon had a common ancestor. After that I received a free offer for a broken nose and chiped tooth.
