Some of IKEA's desks aren't even particleboard anymore; one I bought recently is like a scaffolding of cheap balsa wood overlaid with a thick veneer. It looks solid but its mostly hollow inside... not good if you're trying to mount something to it like a monitor stand.

I'm not really a fan of most of their furniture these days, much of which is now overpriced for what you get. However, some of their cheaper pieces, parts and stuff found in the clearance room can be frankensteined into some cool and functional items on the cheap with a little creativity. I once built a wall-mounted bathroom cabinet with about $15 worth of parts found in the clearance room and a piece of 1x6 from Home Depot.

A lot of the lower priced pieces are made from inexpensive interior doors with a thin veneer or foil on it. Those are made from a dense fiberboard shell surrounding a void packed with corrugated cardboard.

I had a $30 coffee table made from it. Didn't take long before a chip in the veneer plus drink condensation caused the fiber to swell making it blister and peel.

But... its a $30 coffee table.

The beds are much better made, with steel supports. And I can't complain about my 10 year old sofa either.

I was in ikea recently and I was surprised to see that many of the ultracheap items (like the $30 coffee table) seem to be discontinued.

We don't mind the step by step instructions. It's the fact it is 110 steps and takes half a day that gets people riled. I understand that we are getting what we pay for but it doesn't make it any less frustrating in the moment.

Plus, personally, I find it to be the most uncomfortable furniture I have ever sat on. I have never bought a piece of furniture from there. Their lighting is about the only thing decent. If it's your bag, great but I want comfy.

I don't get the IKEA hate. IKEA, like any other retail store in the world, has varying levels of quality. Buy the nicer stuff and it lasts just fine. I have 2 IKEA bedroom sets that are solid wood and they have held up great.

The particle board/veneer crap is worthless no matter where you buy from.

People just hate Ikea because they present an upscale image, but much of what they sell is crap. Also if you want to pay for real furniture, why go to Ikea?

Because with the money I saved buying IKEA bedroom sets I went and bought a name brand sofa.

Well, like somebody else said, its for veneer, you can veneer a lot more particle board furniture from an old tree than you could build real furniture from the same amount of wood.

Ikea's kitchen cabinets are a good deal though. Yes they're particleboard, but so are a lot of other brands that sell for twice the price and are no better.

Absolutely wrong. Old growth forest are dominated by climax species via a process called succession. So if you have a 100 year old lodgepole pine forest it is not old growth until the fir take over and hit about 400 years old or the cedar after 600 years....that's why I CARE!!!

I live right near High Point, where people still make quality, solid wood furniture. I'm typing from a desk that my dad used as a kid, made from nice, solid hardwood, that was hardly expensive when he got it, but it's still going strong.

Fark Ikea. I hate disposable crap, and they're some of the worst offenders. I simply can't stand the idea of old growth forests being cut to pump out shiat that'll last for all of two months.

Is it wrong that I like decent craftsmanship and things that last? It sure as hell seems to be unusual these days...

Buy from goodwill or the salvation army. Or a used furniture consignment store. Or an antique store- you can get the nice stuff, or you can get the worn stuff that you can refinish yourself (nice weekend project). It'll look nicer, last longer, and is greener to boot. Oh, and often cheaper.

IKEA isn't cutting down the old growth Russian forests. It's that they're buying wood from illegal chinese loggers (they're pretty much "tree poachers") along with other legal sources.

I don't buy Ikea stuff anymore- I consider it furniture for "your first set of furniture" until you get something really nice- your "last set of furniture".

That being said, I put together a lot of Ikea crap. The instructions were not bad but some things were extremely tedious to put together. Ikea might not use sweat shops, but they turn YOU into a sweat shop worker.
