Henderson turned off the helicopter's rotor blade when they landed. Stanley got out, but stayed close to the chopper.

"The blade was slowing, but it was still moving," CHP spokesman Lt. Scott Fredrick told msnbc.com.

As the rotors slowed, the blade sagged, and slammed Stanley in the back of the head. He collapsed, unconscious, instantly. Blood was coming from his shattered skull.

I'm cringing at this.

Yeah, I wouldn't think this would be more than a brain-scooper operation.

He better watch out, those things don't like to leave their prey alive.

Big Bear Lake is east of Los Angeles. The helicopter ride to Redding (northern Ca.) took 40 minutes. That's one fast whirrly bird !!

/ Head and Shoulders.

They don't mention his status in the article, but from another one: "The CHP has declined to reveal his condition, but Kilburn said on the flight over, Stanley gave him a thumbs up. He is hopeful Stanley will make a full recovery."

I know. And judging from the article still is conscious and is somewhat lucid. A goddamn miracle. Of course he had a combat surgeon right there and then so that probably why he's still alive.

I was rtfa and hoped that they would go to Redlands, just a bit closer to BBL than Redding.

Different Big Bear lake. NE of Lassen Peak. Some killer hikes (figuratively and nearly literally in the article) in that area.

John Landis is talented, but he probably should've been found guilty on that manslaughter charge.

He's even luckier he was rescuing a trauma surgeon.

A helmet won't help you if those blades strike you while they're in rotation. They are designed to be very aerodynamic with their leading edges, and spin at hundreds of RPM at high torque.

davidphogan: He's even luckier he was rescuing a trauma surgeon.

True. True.
