One of my measures of how good a band is, is whether or not they sound good live. Well I dunno about the rest of the band, but Robert Smith is a phenomenal performer, and Three Imaginary Boys sounds truly haunting when done acoustic. The rest was great, but that first song just grabbed me. Quite a treat.

Okay, I was gonna say something snarky along the lines of "Holy shiat, that guy ate Robert Smith!", but after watching the video it's actually pretty darn obvious that he actually gives a shiat about his fans. Good on ya RS!

THAT is why he's awesome. An acquaintance of mine plays in a pretty well known band. The band is having some issues because of the ego of the lead singer, who essentially told the rest of the band that he is the band, and he regularly threatens to replace them with session musicians. This same acquaintance has also played on tour with a very another well known "band" and while the dynamic much better, there was still no doubt that that singer viewed them as easily replaceable cogs. It's really refreshing to see Smith stand up for his mates like this. I wish more people were able to control their egos as well as he does!

On the other hand, this is a band that's had 19 different members throughout its existence (if you go back to its early days as Malice), the only constant (and sole founding member) being Smith. So, one could argue that Robert Smith is The Cure.

He's always come off as a very down-to-earth and humble guy. Very cool set and nice to see a guy that gives a damn about his fans.

/saw Van Halen (Hagar) many years ago in San Diego...they had some technical issues and so while the roadies did their thing, VH did much the same thing...broke out the acoustics and a single snare drum and just sat around a couple of mics for 20 minutes just kind of riffing and whatnot...

Smith's always been on my "good guys" list. He did a parody on MTV of their "Cribs" show, leading a tour of the redecoration of his new flat in London - the workers were painting everything black.

The cure always put on a good show. and can still rock a three hour set. I would like to see any of their peers (DM, Moz, Peter Murphy) still put on a three hour show. I have always thought that they go take care of their fans.

Many years ago they had to cancel the San Diego show. so they honored all the SD tickets at the Irvine show the next day (a Saturday) or full refund. But they were in the upper levels. As a trade off SD ticket holds were allowed in for the sound check. Middle of the day, no light show no smoke machine. Just The Cure in shorts and t-shirts playing, chatting, and taking request for 2+ hours. That was a good show.

I've seen The Cure 7 times, and each time was a 3+ hour long show, they always come through for the fans.

I would rather pay $30 to listen to just those three songs live than EVER pay to listen to Sisters Of Mercy again. For any reason or length of time.

I'm pretty sure that was a spoof sketch on a show much older than Cribs called "Half Hour Comedy Hour" I clearly remember him telling the contractor to brick over this large window with a gorgeous view.

One year me and some friends followed them around New York and New Jersey. The shows were all awesome but I vowed it would take a major tour like that to ever get me to go back to New Jersey.

A whole lot cooler then what happened here in Ottawa with Phil Collins about 12 years back. The giant turntable his drum set was on broke and he spent about fifteen minutes cursing out the roadies while they fixed it.

I can't speak for the others, or the current times, but a decade ago Peter Murphy was known to put on a good solo show in the smaller venues he played. I've seen him a few times, and he always gives it his all.

As for the Cure- Yes, they always put on a great show. I've seen them half a dozen times as a band, and various members (or ex-members) in solo performances in smaller venues, and they're always good, always attentive to their fans, and clearly talented.

I met Roger, Lol, Porl, and Boris. The current lineup also includes Reeves Gabrels and I briefly got to say hello to him at a Bowie concert once. Sadly, I never got to meet Robert-- He's notoriously shy and disappears after shows. (And no, I didn't meet Bowie. I had the opportunity, but as he was my idol at the time, I chickened out because I didn't want to act a fool in front of him).

Anyway, the members I met are all gracious, pleasant guys who really care about their fans. I've never been disappointed by a Cure show, or the behavior of the band members.

I saw them on the Distintegration tour as well. Absolutely great show, they must have played for 3 hours. It's like they love to be on stage playing or something.

I'm not a Cure fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I watched that entire clip and it was really cool.

I'm not a fan of the majority of their really early pop-punk stuff. I think they really hit their stride around The Top and Head on the Door.

I've honestly never heard of Chrome and Can. I will have to check them out. Any song suggestions.

Not really. Simon Gallup joined in '79 right after Three Imaginary Boys, left in '82 after the Pornography tour when he and Smith were on bad terms, then patched things up and has been there continuously since '85. Porl Thompson's sort of in and out as he pleases (had other commitments so didn't participate in the most recent tour), but '76-78, '83-94, '05-09 and still affiliated. Roger O'Donnell's on his second tour of duty...'87-05, '11-present. And Jason Cooper's been there since '95. Everybody except the newest guy has their fingerprints over a fistfull of Cure albums. It's always been a full band...never just one guy's brand name.
