That used to be the stuff of nightmares. I grew up at exactly the right time in the 80s to know for certain that some maniac on our side would see some radar blip from Russia and that was going to be the end of us.

I used to wake up with my heart pounding, practically screaming, because I just KNEW someone had just pushed the buttons.

/now I wake up with my heart pounding and practically screaming because I know they never will
//seriously, have you watched the news lately?

Personally, I think every last living person should send one dollar to this guy Link. He's the reason most of you are even reading this today.

Sad part is they're unheard of for the most part. I don't think people really realize how close we came to the end. If it hadn't been for a handful of people who had the courage to ask the right questions at the right time, human history would have ended.

This. Used to sleep with my window open just in case the sirens went off. I'm sure I still have embedded psych problems from that era.

What you can't see is the video was filmed by a 17 year old Russian boy who had climbed a 1,900 foot tower freehand, swung on an old clothes line rope to a silo where he stood on his head to take the shot before bungee jumping down attached to a rubber band.

indarwinsshadow: That story has stuck with me for 30 years.

30 years ago, my father had been a button pusher for SAC years before (i think it was SAC back then). My father and I were talking about this stuff and I asked my dad what we'd do if an attack happened. Without batting an eye "Nothing. We couldn't get far enough away since we live where we do. There's probably more nukes targeted here than any other place on the planet. It's not worth worrying about, just continue to live."

Sound advice and I never thought on it again.

Yeah, that was my line of thinking too. We lived near a SAC airbase (Fairchild AFB) and had come to the conclusion that we were going to be one of the first sites nuked and there was nothing we could do about it.

It still scared the shiat out of me thinking about it, but we didn't need to worry about living through it afterwards.

I've seen this before, but I watched it again. It looks like shooting stars hitting the beach. Scary and beautiful at the same time.

Sometimes i think about what I would do if Dallas is hit with a nuke and I survived the first one. But yeah, like the other posters have said above I don't think i'd get far enough before the next one hits. I would guess the time between launches of a massive first or retaliatory strike is seconds to minutes so therefore the time between detonations would be seconds to minutes as well. And for large population centers (DFW) there would be multiple inbound warheads. Besides, even if i did surve the 5 to 10 detonations I'd still have to get out, likely on foot, and I would be too far radiated at that point to survive.
