Woot! My alma mater at #1!

They're finally getting better. Not great, but at least they're winning.

Once, when a reporter asked Paterno when he planned on retiring, he responded by saying he didn't want to leave college football to the Jackie Sherrills and Barry Switzers.

That quote, like many of the scandals listed in TFA, looks a little different this morning.

It's bad, but it's also not a NCAA scandal as the NCAA rules were not broken.

Well, for starters, the NCAA always allows the Institution being questioned to conduct an internal investigation before making any summation ruling. That investigation was released Yesterday.

The actions at Penn State also likely violated NCAA bylaw 10.1, which regulates unethical actions by athletes, staff members and former staff members.

I thought it was kind of fishy how Louisiana Lafayette keeps changing their name (Louisiana Wester, Southwestern Louisian, Louisiana Lafayette). By the way, I love Lafayette, it's a neat little town.

What the NCAA does or doesn't do to the athletics program isn't my primary concern. We have a shiat-load of criminal and civil matters that need to be addressed before I'll start worrying about their athletics program being penalized by the NCAA.

That's true, but Penn State shouldn't play another down of football until those cases are resolved.

No NCAA rules were broken? (Perhaps it's you who should keep farking that chicken)

per the NCAA Constitution, Article 2.4

2.4 The PrInciple of Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct.

"For intercollegiate athletics to promote the character development of participants, to enhance the integrity of higher education and to promote civility in society, student-athletes, coaches, and all others associated with these athletics programs and events should adhere to such fundamental values as respect, fairness, civility, honesty and responsibility. These values should be manifest not only in athletics participation, but also in the broad spectrum of activities affecting the athletics program."

The next few sections require all member institutions to put in place rules and procedures to ensure that these elements are enforced.

Clearly, the Penn State program did not adhere to the fundamental values of respect, civility, honesty and responsibility as it relates to their football program. Thus, they are in violation of the rules (Constitution) of the NCAA.

At first I was for the death penalty - the more I think about it - the more I am for the NCAA just expelling their football program (or entire athletic department) from the NCAA. Let them go join the NAIA or something.

I'm torn on this one. I don't think it's fair to the current players, the new staff, etc. to issue a death penalty. That said, this certainly calls for it. Give the players a transfer and shut down the program for a year. That's probably the only way to get the point across to the ones still defending this, and to the universities out there to never let this shiat happen again.

Man, Fisher started out so great, winning the NCAA championship after our head coach jumped ship.

Then he ceded control of the program to the players and didn't tell Martin to bug off. Oops.

Yep, let the players transfer out if they choose, without penalty, then shut it down.

It's almost never fair to the current players/staff. The offenders are long gone before they're discovered.

Let them play--with all walk-ons from the general student population. Maybe drop them to Division II or III for a few years, with no scholarships or recruiting.

Bo put that up in the Michigan tunnel in his first year, as players were dropping out of the program left and right with the more rigorous practices he started. Someone wrote over it "And those who go will be doctors, lawyers, and captains of industry." Bo wasn't too happy to have to repaint it.

Penn State on pace to have the highest year ever for alumni donations.

Penn State grads approve of child rape and even support it. Penn State fans are part of the culture that allowed this to happen.

The entire Penn State athletic program should be given the NCAA death penalty for all sports.

It's always amusing to see a "circle the wagons" mentality from the outside. My own school went through this recently as the NCAA deemed our nickname "hostile and abusive" to Native Americans. The final battles have played out this year and as it drew closer and closer to a finish the circle became tighter and the defenders more and more shrill.

Central Michigan is the Chippewas. NCAA doesn't seem to be messing with them.

Eastern Michigan University switched from Hurons to Eagles despite no objections from the few Hurons out there. They really missed an opportunity. They could have been the EMU Emus.

I worked at the school newspaper when a massive scandal involving a scam concerning textbook provisions hit the papers. I was the Sports Editor at the time. The editors of the paper were insistent that we run the mugshots of the first three students named in the scandal on the front page. Myself and a couple others suggested that was setting a bad precedent, and made them promise they would treat any further violations in the same manner (the volleyball team was among the most minor offenders, accidentally purchasing 'recommended' instead of 'required' books with the funds). This was the result: Link That page ended up winning a national award for design, even thought he designers hated the idea of running all those mugshots at the time.

/cool story, bro

I hate the NCAA for hundreds of reasons... but if they did something around now, I'd applaud them for letting all the investigations and trials take their course first. The investigation that ended yesterday should be the final nail in the coffin.

Now is the time to act.

And if something isn't in the rule book? Change it, today. Most other sports leagues can and do. NHL put rules in place mid-season, on a dime, to battle concussions. NASCAR changes rules immediately for competitive reasons.

Also, any league should have a "best interests of baseball" or "actions detrimental to stock car racing" catch-all rule.

NASCAR didn't need a specific rule to boot Kurt Busch out for one race after berating a reporter.
