| Slives If you want to take a toll on smuggling, put up a toll booth. Or just make it a revolving door with a bill acceptor on it. Call it a tax and you are good to go. |

You can buy a tunnel boring machine (Link) for a couple $100k. That could make a serious tunnel in no time, and be re-used to make additional tunnels. I did not RTFA, so was this 755 foot tunnel a "hand-dug" one? A boring machine could do that in a tenth of the time. |
||
| mr_a Maybe we could put these guys in charge of building our roads? They seem to do it faster and cheaper than anyone. |
||
| loonatic112358 You know, instead of closing these, maybe they should be utilized as official entrances. Expand it a little, add a tsa checkpoint to let the folks know what they're in for |

This one started in a washroom and ended in a mall I think, DNRTFA either but another source. A boring machine is loud and creates a lot of vibration, I assume someone in California is looking at the ground shaking and would notice unusuall shaking. Also it's hard to hide one of those things, people have legit reasons to be carrying a shovel. |

Why do you need to create a man sized line? |

leave the tunnel, fill it with carbon monoxide, let nature happen. when full, fill in ends with dirt. |

The owner of the tunnel could do what he wanted with it, but his gang and the rest of the world could still use the tunnel (while not changing it?) What type of lax security is that shiznat? |
||
| farkeruk I assumed that drug smugglers would be using robotic subs by now. |

DEA hopes closing of one of the 755 foot US/Mexico drug tunnels will take a toll on smuggling fixt |

| Kuroshin But remember people, we totally need that above-ground wall... |

Until the next tunnel is discovered, then they'll say the same thing. /The DEA, whose very existence depends on continued drug smuggling. |
||
| HotIgneous Intruder
Fill it with concrete and it won't get used again. |

| groppet
Well good luck closing the other 30 tunnels |
||
| FloydA Want to stop people from smuggling pot? Legalize it; you'll take all the profit out of it. This isn't rocket surgery, folks. |

They should have left the tunnel and not said anything but put a trap on the end so when you come out of the hole it springs closed and you can't get out. And then put a little button in it that says "Ring for service" so it wouldn't even need to be monitored. |

This is just ridiculous. |

So what happens when the guys drive up to the US end with their trucks full of legally purchased arizona guns and find the trap building over the hole? Oh. You thought it was a one way tunnel. |

I did not RTFA, so was this 755 foot tunnel a "hand-dug" one? A boring machine could do that in a tenth of the time. Two reasons. 1. As mentioned before taking one into a house would look more than suspicious. But beyond that, some places have vibration sensors. Especially in places that have a lot of earthquakes. It could be too easy to detect. 2. Cost. There is the cost of that machine... Or there are mexicans. Not meaning to be racist. You tell a family that wants to get over the border to bring in their family, the family's family, and some more... Then tell them you will feed them well, give them a little money, new clothes, and give them a few thousand dollars when the get to the other end. They are some of the hardest working, most determined people. Those two points being said. You would still have to make it person sized to finish digging to the other side silently. You could lay in a few pipes then fill it up. But why when you already have something that can transport larger volume. |

Two words: jury nullification. If we as citizens stop convicting drug dealers, we can send a message that we tired of wasting money on the never ending War On Drugs. |

Corporate Self: Two words: jury nullification. If we as citizens stop convicting drug dealers, we can send a message that we tired of wasting money on the never ending War On Drugs. It would take a vast conspiracy to make that happen as the entire goal of both the prosecution and defense during the jury selection is to eliminate people who can think for themselves. |

Corporate Self: Two words: jury nullification. If we as citizens stop convicting drug dealers, we can send a message that we tired of wasting money on the never ending War On Drugs. Good luck with that. There are too many people who believe drugs are the work of the devil and would probably convict without even considering the evidence is not sound. Of course all you need is one non-guilty vote to prevent a conviction, but even so they ask questions during jury selection and lying can get you in serious trouble - if they can prove you're lying and wish to pursue it. But after reading the article I wondered what 39 pounds of meth was in terms of doses. Bear in mind the article did say it wasn't a huge quantity, but 39 pounds seems like a lot to me (if it were pot even), but I have no idea when it comes to meth. So I found this interesting discussion on the internet which suggests that 1/10th of a gram is a typical dose. (lol at the comment: I would suggest trying 0.1g not 0.25g; that is quite a bit. You might experience some headache, restlessness, insomnia, etc. at such a high dosage.) So 39 pounds is something like 177,000 doses. And there are still some people who think all meth is made in the USA. Hey, isn't tonight the season premiere of Breaking Bad? |
