| Weaver95 the school SHOULD rip down that statue. what Paterno did was despicable. |
||
| Aarontology They should keep the statue, but also add a small statue of a child behind it so it looks like Paterno is ignoring the kid. |
||
| Pocket Ninja I'm OK with the statue staying up, but only if it's altered somehow to mark the true nature of the man. Maybe add three monkeys perched on his shoulders and head, covering his eyes, ears, and mouth to reflect his deliberate decision to see, hear, and speak nothing about what he knew. Or maybe chisel a naked little boy over his shoulder with a ribbon around his chest that says "for jerry." Or maybe even something simpler, a sign in his hand that says "child rape is the cost of good football." Because we don't want to lose sight of the fact that the man, you know, did some good things for the college, won some games and taught a lot of players and alumnae that honor is important. We don't want to lose sight of that in the face of recent scandal, and the man deserves his legacy. |

| Mudgen If "a guard" means "one", I don't think a Baghdad style mob will be deterred. |

Mudgen: If "a guard" means "one", I don't think a Baghdad style mob will be deterred. Mostly because that mob was US soldiers and a tank. |
||
| Weaver95 Aarontology: They should keep the statue, but also add a small statue of a child behind it so it looks like Paterno is ignoring the kid. I like the idea of adding a small kid off to one side, with an expression of quiet anguish on his face. But I still think the whole thing should go. "My name is JoePa, king of kings: Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!" |
||
| scottydoesntknow Yea, instead of wasting money on a security guard, waste some money on a pep rally to tear the farker down. Like the old-school car destruction pep rallies. $5 for five swings of a sledgehammer, breaking a limb earns a slice of pizza. Or Tug of war on either side and the first side to pull it down wins, i don't know, something. |

Sure, but what about all the good things JoePa did? |

He didn't deserve to die, he deserved to see everything he worked for crumble around him. |

| make me some tea Scrub Paterno off everything on that campus and melt it down. There's no point in having homages to someone who would protect a pedophile. |

| Grand_Moff_Joseph make me some tea: Scrub Paterno off everything on that campus and melt it down. There's no point in having homages to someone who would protect a pedophile. Exactly. That the university would spend a thin dime to protect anything with Paterno's name on it shows how callous they truly are. Maybe they'll get the message if students stage a mass walk out and alumni shut their wallets. |

Aarontology: how is that even remotely relevant to the discussion at hand? Because mob anger fades. It's a statue in a college town in the middle of Pennsylvania. In a week no one will care about the "legacy of JoePa". |

Like the old-school car destruction pep rallies. $5 for five swings of a sledgehammer, breaking a limb earns a slice of pizza. Or Tug of war on either side and the first side to pull it down wins, i don't know, something. Forgetting one thing, the typical We Are Penn State opinion is that Joe Pa "should have done more" but was "betrayed" and "still deserves to be remembered as a good man." Not as a rapist-enabler for 14 years (or more?) who actively intervened in protecting crime, who was more interested in dissuading the administration from investigation than in truly being a moral leader. The culture of Creepy Valley is deeply mired in Joe Pa Worship at the moment, they probably won't completely ever stop. The NCAA needs to step in and set an example. Which I think they will probably do, because no NCAA scandal in history has involved serial rape of children and an active ongoing coverup by a school administration. Some argue "it didnt benefit football" but thats nonsense, football benefitted from 14 years of silence and in keeping this quiet and going about its daily business of recruiting. The program needs to be kicked out of the NCAA, in my opinion. Stripped of any Joe Pa wins since 1998, relegated to the NAIA. The Big Ten, who bought Penn State's act and let them join in 1994, should move to kick them out. Any record set by a Joe Pa team should be scrubbed from the record book. The culture of Penn State was such that "a good man" became a serial rapist, and another "good man" lied to cover it up, while several other "good men" made sure they had their a--es covered as administrators. Low level employees were intimidated into not coming forward and reporting what they saw after hours. The crimes were committed on campus using campus facilities and the criminal was allowed to keep access to campus facilities for over 10 years after his boss knew what he did. This is worse than any recruiting scandal. This is the single worst series of criminality in NCAA history. Removing the statue won't be necessary once they disenfranchise the schools football program. It should remain as a reminder of what happens when you worship false idols. |

| I_C_Weener WTF Indeed: Sure, but what about all the good things JoePa did? Yes, think of all the pedophiles he helped. One man's monster is another man's hero. As Obi Wan said to Luke, "Yes, the man who became Darth Vader did kill your father, from a certain point of view." |

| sigdiamond2000 If there's one thing this scandal has taught me, it's that Happy Valley is one of the most f*cked up places in America. This place makes Clearwater look sane. |

||
| mr_a If that guard is as alert and responsive as all the rest of the PSU staff, the statue, the pedestal, the fence, the surrounding lawn and probably the street will be stolen. |

SlothB77: scottydoesntknow: Only thing that sucks is he's not alive to witness his fall. i'm pretty sure this scandal contributed significantly to his death. He didn't 'notice' anything until right before he died. He confessed and took responsibility when he knew there was no hope for his survival. Yes, perhaps the realization of what he had done contributed to the demise of a dying man but I really can't muster much sympathy. /don't have the delusional football/hero worship thing |

| namatad Weaver95: the school SHOULD rip down that statue. what Paterno did was despicable. Good thing that paterno was worried about how this would reflect on him and the school. Bwahahahahahahahahaah |

Well, obviously, you're right there in Harrisburg, and what did you do to expose Penn State's bad behavior? Nothing, that's what you did. Absolutely nothing. /not sure if serious |
||
| DjangoStonereaver WTF Indeed: Sure, but what about all the good things JoePa did? Go read "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" and tell me if, given the revelations of his cover-ups, he really did any good. /Not a big fan of Ursula LeGuin, but this one story really got to me |
||
| namatad mr_a: If that guard is as alert and responsive as all the rest of the PSU staff, the statue, the pedestal, the fence, the surrounding lawn and probably the street will be stolen. You know, it is a good sign that penn state hasnt learned anything at all yet. They are honesty worried about the statue of a pedophile protector? LOL How is doing the right thing so confusing to these tards? Oh wait, they have no morals. NVM |

All the outrage over this scandal and the university actually taking steps now to right its wrongs. Versus the entire Catholic Church. What- one person in any rank above priest has gone to jail or something like that? Unbelievable. |
