I grew up near Penn State, lived there for a while (didn't attend). It always impressed me how brainwashed the kids there were with regards to JoePa. Even more annoying is that so many of them continue to defend him. All the sympathy in the world for a guy that covered up for a pedophile but none for the children that were raped. Stay classy, friends...

Penn State is a religion to some people. Blame it on their parents. My father practically worshiped the ground JoePa walked on, and I doubt any amount of evidence to the contrary would have swayed his opinion.

Yeah when they rallied around the house shortly after the news broke and they fired JoePa... it made me sick to watch. A bunch of kids cheering. Yes we didn't know yet for sure that JoePa was involved but we did know for sure that a lot of kids were molested and you are cheering someone who is suspected of protecting the molester? Wow... just blew me away ... and validated everything I ever thought about Penn State's culture.

There are some similarities with the Catholic church. The nature of the crime, the coverup... but one thing I don't see are Catholics that defend the priests and church. Every Catholic I know is apologetic for what happened... Penn State alum and fans? Not so much.

This whole thing is just...sad. It doesn't matter anymore who did what, the end result is that what was once the greatest team in the Northeast is reduced to being "that place with the pedophile." The Northeast has always had it rough for football teams. I mean, we care as much about BC in the Boston area as much as North Florida cares about the Jaguars. The two state schools have the worst stadium situations imaginable, I've always hated the Cuse, what's left? Rutgers? Temple? Ivy League teams? Maybe Pitt if you can get past the fact that most Pittsburghers are PSU fans....

My friend's inlaws pulled their grandkids (not my friend's children) out of school when Paterno died and took them to State College for 4 days to mourn. It's a sickness.

A good sign of how messed things up are at Penn State is when they hired their new coach. A bunch of the football boosters and such lost their collective minds and said they in effect would never welcome him because he has no previous affiliation with the school.
