| downstairs ThatGuyGreg: Each penny glued down? Some future contractor doing demo is going to want to kill himself. Exactly, but not sure what its glued down on. If I were to do it, I'd glue it to cheap, white lenolium tiles. Or something like that. The cheapest, thinnest tile you could find. Maybe another color like black or brown would match better, but you get the point. |

| dletter Also, I'm not sure if those came out to be 1 ft x 1 ft tiles, but, they were 16x19 in pennies, which is $3.04.... decide for yourself if pennies as a floor covering is a good deal at $3.04/sqft. /I guess at least you can always get your money back later. |

I'm pretty sure that they weren't 1 sqft tiles. From another link: We just installed the pennies (we had glued to the mosaic tile mesh backing) directly over the existing ceramic tile in the vestibule (foyer/entryway) with regular thin set. We then grouted it with laticrete epoxy grout in chocolate truffle. It was really very easy and i love the way it came out.. most people that first see it don't realize that it's pennies. It took 3,889 pennies (it's about 3'-8" x 5'-8")...so $38.89 for app. 24 sf of tile is not bad at all. $38.89 divided by 24 sqft is about $1.62 per sqft. Still not the cheapest thing in the world, but if you have a crap-ton of pennies lying around your house... |

What did they cover it with, and did they have multiple grounding sites? Because it seems like an electrical hazard, especially in a kitchen. |
||
| Recoil Therapy Hmmm, I've got a small end table that the top is absolutely destroyed (deep scratches) but the legs & sides are still fine. Covering the top with pennies & then a thick coat of poly might make a really cool project. Thanks for the idea subby |

Commercial kitchens... and now trending in home kitchens... often use stainless steel countertops. And copper, while expensive, is often used for lots of things. Interesting question though. |

Compared to formica, stainless steel is a good conductor of electricity, but compared to copper, a poor conductor. Regardless, I don't think I'd put either on the floor where spills happen, loose conducting wires fall, and people walk around barefoot. |

RoyBatty: Regardless, I don't think I'd put either on the floor where spills happen, loose conducting wires fall, and people walk around barefoot. And it's not just the spills or random loose wires, it's the nature of it probably being grounded (contrary to what I wrote earlier), and thus allowing your barefoot body to form the conductor between the old, shorting, blender and the new copper penny floor. Perhaps I would intentionally ground it through a ground fault detector tied to the circuit brakers, but that seems expensive and dubious to rely on. /I am not a lawyer or electrician or doctor, any electrical advice I give here should not be taken. |

| Lor M. Ipsum The end product looks great, but right now, it really highlights how mundane the rest of the kitchen is. |

Umm, the pennies are not supposed to be touching - there should be some grout between them. That is why you need a template. |

So worthless it can be made into a floor for cheaper than any sort of wood or tile. Time to ditch the penny, and the nickel. The half penny had more purchasing power than a dime now when it was retired. |

It looks to me like they applied sealer at the end there, so that would mean the copper isn't even exposed. If it weren't sealed, I'd be more concerned about the cleaning nightmare it would be over any electrical hazards... |

Good point, although the pennies are copper plated: 1983-present 97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper (core: 99.2% zinc, 0.8% copper; plating: pure copper) And A/C current runs mostly on the surface of a conductor. I'm pretty sure a penny is a good conductor. |

You're probably right, and this is a surface just as safe as linoleum. I tend to think that between bare feet, many times larger than the size of a single penny, spills, scraping of furniture, movement, time, bad luck, etc., that it's asking for trouble. |

People use cold rolled steel on kitchen floors and I have yet to hear of someone being electrocuted. Settle down you OCD geeks! Yeesh. I have been collecting actual copper pennies so I can do my powder room. I really want that templet the guy used. |

Why use a template if you are going to place each penny into each slot? Dump those pennies on it, spread them around, then fill the empty spots. |
