This is bad news for my coworker who sells it to me. Given the state of the economy, I can't imagine how well Avon/Tupperware/NuSkin or whatever other MLMs are out there are doing financially.

What about Stringer?

I've never understood how these businesses work. I guess in a rural area, it might beat going to the store. But now with the Internet, isn't it easier to just order stuff on-line?

Avon not so much. I sell, and have a pretty small but consistent group of customers - I do a little better than break even, but I also don't put a psychotic amount of effort into it, and I enjoy it. (About 80% of my customers just order online and have their stuff shipped straight to them, so that makes it even easier for me.) I hit the occasional local sales meeting and they're pretty low-key. Mainly intros on new things coming out and you get to have some snacks and socialize and get some free samples. The regional sales meetings are a little more...intense, but no one corners you and wants to know why you haven't brought in more people or anything like that. Just a lot of bells and whistles and "wooo, new stuff!!" presentations. Never been pressured to recruit downline - if you want to, go for it, if not, then don't.

Avon *finally* got with the program and started online ordering a while back. If you don't have a rep, you just choose one from your general area and order. Ships in a couple days, the rep gets credit for the sale, and you don't have to deal with being available for a delivery on a particular day, or constrained to the two week ordering cycle when using a rep for in person ordering. Much easier for everyone.

I've heard that the new emerging market for these types of businesses is China. According to an NPR report I heard about three years ago, AmWay was set to explode over there because people could essentially guilt-trip their entire family into buying product.

Some of them are doing better. In addition to the endless supply of stupid and greedy people, this economy has generated a just-as-endless supply of desperate people.

A friend of ours calls my girlfriend and says she has this business opportunity, curious she agrees to meet her for lunch. I immediately know it i some MLM thing but tell her to go anyway out of morbid curiosity.

Well, turns out it wasn't meeting for lunch, but meeting WITH the girl's "boss" in an office somewhere. "What are your dreams?", "What goals do you have?", blah blah blah and so on. Justifiably pissed, my girlfriend loses patience very quickly as they start in on their spiel. After only a couple of questions she stops them, "You do realize I am an Apothecary (pharmacist that runs a pharmacy), and I make (insert large sum) a year at a pretty easy job. How much do you make busting your ass while pissing off all of your friends and family?"

They didn't have much to say after that. I think I might have strung them along a little and done the math to show how little they made for the amount of work they did. But I am a jerk that likes math.

the best mlm and stick it to your friends and family company i heard of was in the tap water treatment scam business. the company hires you and then tells you to sell to everyone you put down on your application as references and past employers. the company did to the neighbor's kid who was 18 or 19 and slightly on tard mode. the poor kid thought he had his first job and the not wealthy family bought him some nice clothes too.

This amuses me because the most recent Mary Kay car I saw was a black Mustang. Really nice, almost factory looking Mary Kay emblems on the lower part of the doors. Made me wonder if it was something like a Shelby, but for girls.

Jeez. Deception is never a good way to get customers for any product. That's why I don't mind Pampered Chef parties - you know in advance what you're getting into, and it's basically a cooking demo with good food and, "Oh, yeah, we have kitchen gadgets if you want some."

I had a Chinese coworker try to convince me to buy a bunch of bottles of some miracle vitamin juice drink. He had apparently bought A LOT of the stuff, and was trying to unload it. I could never figure out why; I wonder if he was guilted into it.

That is the crux of the scam, when you join they make you buy a humongous "starter pack" for several hundred dollars (at least). That is how the company actually makes money, not off of actual customers.
