GD that could have been a lot worse. /wikipedia says they decreased the size of the area that they can clearcut, but it may be time to rethink the whole thing |

that mountain just took a big dump. |

Subby That's not the coast, it's Kootenay lake. Unoriginal_Username Has nothing to do with logging, The terrain that failed is inoperable (ie. impossible to log) |

The pacific northwest rests on volcanic ash, with a very thin layer of topsoil. the terrain is quite steep, and not really anchored to bedrock. It takes surprisingly little for the topsoil/tree layer to give way, happens every winter. This year we've had a late/wet spring, so the ground is still more like winter due to late snowpack melt and higher than average runoff. clear cutting is sometimes part of the reason, but doesn't seem to have been in this case. The land out here is just prone to get up and move when it feels like it. |

New Age Redneck: Subby That's not the coast, it's Kootenay lake. Unoriginal_Username Has nothing to do with logging, The terrain that failed is inoperable (ie. impossible to log) Ok, the only reason for my comment was that it looked like post clearing logs in the video. Specifically the part where it shows them in the water, around the 00:57 mark. Of course, the last time I was there was the Vancouver Island, that was around '98, there were a few areas that looked like they were cleared but not much was done after the fact. Though, after seeing the video with the link that was with the submitted video, I can see your point |

I was rooting for the tree in the middle to make it still standing. Looks like it did. |

If you look at the debris you will see it's filled up with ground up tree limbs and bark. You wouldn't be able to even get a shovel into it. I am in no way an apologist for industrial forestry but here in BC we've long came out of the stone age of timber pigging and have fairly sane forest practices. Not saying that landslides from logging don't happen but due to the legal liability; licensee's are fairly aware of mitigating landslide issues. The people who will have the heavy equipment to remove the debris are likely the local timber licensee, our government and search and rescue people don't have excavators which is the only thing that will remove the debris. We live in a dynamic land here; fire, landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, etc. It is part of living in what is one of the most beautiful places in BC (my opinion). They are very easily dealt with with respect and understanding. I think the residents of the area were noticing the creek browning with silt so they were expecting some sort of failure, just not of this magnitude. One of my good friends is one of the 35 residents of Johnson's Landing. I was relieved to hear he and his young daughter are OK. |

Ahem. "Five minutes ago. Five minutes ago. We were there. We would have been wiped out. Five minutes ago." |

That was the biggest mudslide they saw that day. Until they went home and changed pants. |

'A chunk of coastline' subby? More like150' and as a percentage is't more like a 'RCH' than a 'chunk'. |

douchebag/hater: 'A chunk of coastline' subby? More like150' and as a percentage is't more like a 'RCH' than a 'chunk'. Plus, also, and furthermore, "several"? As in "several boats barely make it out"? I think Noah Webster would agree with me that "several" is taken to mean more than "that guy over there". |

Ever since he was in Lituya Bay in 1958, Link he's been jaded. All he ever talks about. |

| whither_apophis Since cameras are pretty ubiquitous today, I propose we drop social studies in school and replace it with film making 101. /the deck of this boat is very nice //oh the other boat nearly got destroyed? Dang missed it |

That was amazing. The couple that were standing on the shore were so lucky that boat's engine didn't stall. |

bhgh: That was the biggest mudslide they saw that day. Until they went home and changed pants. Yep, I was thinking that there's at least one boat that needs a good hosing off later on. |

Looks like Nick and Jesse have some logs to salvage (unless Relic gets there first). |

| John Buck 41 calbert: massive? chunk? coastline? several? Hyperbole much, subby? -1 Front-runner for worst headline of the year. Pretty high bar, too. |

The fishermen who were in Lituya Bay (AK) on July 9, 1958 scoff at your landslide. THAT landslide generated a wave 1700" feet high. |

"Five minutes ago. Five minutes ago. We were there. We would have been wiped out. Five minutes ago." Really? 'Cos the other people were apparently smart enough to get the eff out of dodge as soon as they heard the first noise. If you would have been "wiped out", I'm sorry you weren't. Gene pool could use a cleaning. |

I think that lesbian was overstating the drama. |

God obviously doesn't want the British in Columbia. |

| BEER_ME_in_CT Wonder what the waves were like on the opposite shoreline? |
