The pacific northwest rests on volcanic ash, with a very thin layer of topsoil. the terrain is quite steep, and not really anchored to bedrock. It takes surprisingly little for the topsoil/tree layer to give way, happens every winter. This year we've had a late/wet spring, so the ground is still more like winter due to late snowpack melt and higher than average runoff.

clear cutting is sometimes part of the reason, but doesn't seem to have been in this case.

The land out here is just prone to get up and move when it feels like it.

Ok, the only reason for my comment was that it looked like post clearing logs in the video. Specifically the part where it shows them in the water, around the 00:57 mark. Of course, the last time I was there was the Vancouver Island, that was around '98, there were a few areas that looked like they were cleared but not much was done after the fact. Though, after seeing the video with the link that was with the submitted video, I can see your point

Those are trees that just got a 1500' ride with mud, rocks and other trees down a creek bed, they have been ground up and are now logs. If you look at the debris you will see it's filled up with ground up tree limbs and bark. You wouldn't be able to even get a shovel into it. I am in no way an apologist for industrial forestry but here in BC we've long came out of the stone age of timber pigging and have fairly sane forest practices. Not saying that landslides from logging don't happen but due to the legal liability; licensee's are fairly aware of mitigating landslide issues. The people who will have the heavy equipment to remove the debris are likely the local timber licensee, our government and search and rescue people don't have excavators which is the only thing that will remove the debris.
We live in a dynamic land here; fire, landslides, avalanches, earthquakes, etc. It is part of living in what is one of the most beautiful places in BC (my opinion). They are very easily dealt with with respect and understanding. I think the residents of the area were noticing the creek browning with silt so they were expecting some sort of failure, just not of this magnitude.
One of my good friends is one of the 35 residents of Johnson's Landing. I was relieved to hear he and his young daughter are OK.
