I know we make jokes about the Mayans and it's funny and all, but Kwame Brown is going to make $3 million a year for the next two years to "play" basketball. Seriously, getting a little freaked out here

We started them off on rudimentary technique and built up to advanced game play.

The NBA just can't admit that a former #1 pick is a total bust

The NFL catches on much better...re: Tim Couch

When you're 6'11" 270 and you have ANY athletic ability, you'll find a team.

Yeah, that's the thing. Teams will pay 3 million a year for a guy who's a good post defender who can rebound, even if he can't really do anything else.

I mean, three years from now, either Houston or Chicago is going to be paying $14.9 million to Omer Asik.

To be fair, asik is an excellent defender. Also Houston would only be paying ~8 mil in three years.

Thanks Michael Jordan. The Washington Wizards wouldn't be the same without your wonderful contributions.

It sucks cuz the sixers have dine everything right so far until this move. And to think you could have very good player in luis Scala for.4 million more.

That's the funny thing though, he can't even really rebound that well. 6.8/g in '10-11...hell Michael Beasley and Iguodala got 6.4 and 6.5 that year respectively. And that was his best rebounding season ever.

Dude had NEGATIVE win shares in '09-10 for Detroit. -0.6 offensive win share, -0.1 overall. I didn't even know that was possible. His PER that year was 7.9.

Looking around the league, that appears to be a low-to-average salary for a bench-riding veteran.

how have the Sixers "done everything right"? They have been one of the most persistently mediocre teams over the past decade, which means they've never had a shot at getting a superstar and actually being good

well to be fair they have attempt to corner the market on second rate wing players, so they've got that going for them. kwame, three 3s and holiday could be the starting five of the future.

To clarify, everything right refers to this offseason, the first in which it seems like our front office actually has a plan.

So far this off-season they have shed a boat load of salary while staying relatively the same talent wise and staying extremely flexible over the next two years. It's clear that their goal is to see what they have in jrue Holliday and Evan turner over the next two seasons and then go from there. If one of them turns into a max contract star (probably not but Jrue is not that unrealistic because he's still only 22) than the plan works out perfectly. If not they haven't committed to anything and can be players in the free agent market the next two seasons. The complete opposite of teams like the Knicks who are making long commitments to players who don't get them anywhere closer to being a contender. You're right in that the sixers are staying mediocre but at least we're not "committing" to being mediocre.

I liked the Sixers team this year. They were flawed, had too many guys who played the same position/didn't really have a position, but they played hard and were entertaining for the most part.

What does this add? Really, if this guy couldn't play the game right playing alongside two of the fiercly driven competitors in NBA history, he's going to turn it around now?

Somehow I don't see the quote "You know, playing with MJ and Kobe was cool and all, but I never really put it together and figured out what it takes to be a pro until I suited up with Andre Iguodala and the boys" being uttered in the near future.

And Doug Collins KNOWS this, he's seen this guy's act before.

Brook Lopez is an above average center on a team that's never gone anywhere. He played 5 games last season and got a max contract. DeAndre Jordan gets 11m per year to hug Blake after he dunks and to sit on the bench at the end of playoff games.

I don't even know what is and isn't underpaid anymore by NBA standards.

In 13 seasons, that boils down to a little under $4.5 million per season. Seems reasonable for 6.8/5.6 per game. He was probably overpaid in his biggest contract, but can't blame a man for getting his. Last season he averaged 6.3/6.4 per game. Seems reasonable for 3 million a year.

The best part of this Kwame thing is thinking about what might have happened had he been forced to go to college for a year, like now. He was easily the highest ranked high schooler that year, and was signed to play at Florida before declaring. That '01-02 team had guys like Matt Bonner (Junior), Udonis Haslem (Senior), and David Lee (Freshmen, 7ppg) on it, so while he definitely would have played, it's not like he would have been the focus of the offense. Let's say he would have ~doubled his NBA scoring average (13ppg) and gotten 8 rpg.

That and his height probably would have made him a Top 5 pick, though probably not #1 overall as '02 was the year of Yao and Jay Williams. Memphis or Denver perhaps. From there who knows; we've seen enough of his work to know that his ceiling is single digit scoring and ~6-7 rebounds a game. Sure wouldn't have been seen the same way though, and probably wouldn't have had nearly as many chances.

Jeremy Lin aside (and I'm still not convinced Knicks wont' match), the Knicks have made the right moves as much as they can. I do not think they will be better than the Heat or OKC or Lakers. But if everything goes right, they could be a homecourt eastern team.

They have their money locked up in Melo and Amare, who are true stars, and Chandler, who is great. Whether or not those pieces all fit perfectly, they have to gun for it now. Can't aim for mediocre but with flexibility to maybe make moves in a few years. Their stars might not be aroudn then.
