Revek: The dog didn't have the will, or it abandoned him? What kind of person do you have to be where your dog deserts you? Autistic or something?? Because a dog will pretty much stick by you forever. Although it may have just gotten lost or something when it went off looking for food. |

Sounds like a fun idea for a hike. Aside from the starvation and autism and all. |

Revek: Really you know for sure your dog would follow you all the way through 150 miles of very damn little? My dog would. So would most people's dogs. Unless it was starving to death, which it likely was. Hell, the dog probably knew a better route than the man did, and it's now happily living with someone else. |

Seriously - that's one tough man. It's been damn hot and dry this summer, and I bet not one in a thousand would survive that experience. There IS that whole "walking-out-into-the-desert-with-no-w ater" thing, though. He has the savvy to survive, but no concept of distance. |

If I read that correctly it was a 50 mile hike. Even with a 60 pound pack on an inexperienced hiker could pull that off in 3-4 days. He was following a river so there was food and water. I realize he is "autistic" but if he is functional enough that his family let him make the trek alone he should be functional enough to pull it off. I think there is something else to this story. |

Not in 100 degree heat they wouldn't be able to. I'm guessing he underestimated how much water he needed to drink. Many people don't have a strong sense of thirst (more common in autistic?) and dry air can be deceiving because you don't feel like you're sweating even though you are a lot. Once dehydration set in he lost all his strength and that was it. |

The heat sapped him, likely caused him to become confused, and if he ever DID regain his bearings, it was likely only at night, when he really couldn't navigate anyway. If he knew how to navigate by the stars, he may have been able to, but otherwise, he was screwed once he got disoriented. |

I know I have done hikes of good distance in 100+ degree climates at different levels of experience and never came close to anything like this and i didn't always have the advantage of hiking down a river. I just think something else happened. I don't think he just "failed". |

Not only that, but looking at a map, it's probably 50 miles in a straight line to the lake. The river is far from straight, winding through a canyon for most of the way, and is probably closer to double that distance. Without a trail, in the desert, in the summer. If you've ever hiked off trail, you know it's probably half the speed as you can make on an established trail. |
