People in this country won't pay a dime in taxes if it helps their fellow man, they vote for politicians who explicitly state that they're going to fark over the general public to help their rich cronies, they cheer like idiots for soldiers whose families are on food stamps while they're deployed to some third world shiathole to "defend our freedom", but goddamn if they'll take to the streets if someone insults an inanimate object.

The more secure a person is in their particular country's general greatness, the less likely they need a flag to tell everyone about it.

There's a reason that when a nation falls into dictatorship or ruin, flag sales surge. Everything gone to shiat? GET OUT THE FLAGS!

They could have avoided this by having a rule stating maximum size and condition. Rules like this make sense if one is trying to maintain a generally clean and orderly appearance, but people should know what unleashing blind nationalism will do.

Some people look at a flag, swaying in the breeze of the White House and say, "That's America." Whenever I see an American flag hung in a window of a basement apartment by guys who have better things to do with their money than buy curtains, I say, "That's America, to me."

I do like how the HOA was trying to pin the blame on the Dept. of Housing and Community Development. Yeah, the state had some kind of dumbass law....but it was one of YOUR TENANTS who was biatching and moaning about how the law wasn't being "obeyed." In other words, some fool who has nothing better to do than sit around and whine that "laws aren't being followed" called the state and complained.

NOBODY is paying their damn taxes to help anyone!!! We should demand congress start taxing all these rich people! We could start a program to help the elderly and disabled, call it social security or something. We can take some of those tax dollars and build roads so people can travel and make trade easier. Some of that cash we can use to provide a FREE basic eduation...like a school for the public or something. We can even take some more of that cash and give it to universities to help offset tuition and provide loans. We can even FEED people by giving them food vouchers....or maybe stamps or cards. We can even take some of that tax money and use it to subsidize homes for poor people!!

Actually, both are handouts. SS is handouts to old people, Defense budget is handouts to corporations in the form of "defense contracts".

I'm impressed.

If one state department can find the means to react so forcefully to a single person's complaint, then maybe other state departments can learn how.
I'm thinking specifically of:

DOT -- potholes, mistimed traffic lights and missing street signs; all fixed with a single phone call!
DOR - problem with your taxes? One call does it all!
RMV - having trouble getting your car registerd? Just call us, we'll take care of it!

Think of the possibilities!

I still assume that this had to do with some less than intelligent types who probably were breaking every part of the Flag Code imaginable in the first place. While the whole thing was dumb, it just reeks of dumb begetting dumb.

It is handout-ish, but not by his definition.

A guy in my mother-in-law's apartment complex caused a stink about wanting to fly the American flag. He was a vet (he worked in the mortuary division, I believe), and talked about how he "sacrificed" for "everyone's" freedoms. That said, he signed a contract when he bought the house that clearly listed not dangling large pieces of fabric off of your house (they even ban those stupid little ladybug flags), and only decided after he lived there for a few months that he suddenly NEEDED to put out the flag to continue breathing.

The HOA resisted, noting that the guy also wanted to install floodlights to keep the flag lit at night, lights that would be bright enough to turn night into daylight for many of the homes around him.

As you can imagine, it quickly became a thing about "freedom" and "American patriotism" and the rights thereof, so people got duly outraged, and were more than happy to trample on everyone else's rights. I think the whole thing is going to court now.

So what number amendment is that constitutional right about flag flying again?

Why do these dipshiats write "No flags" in their notices. Write something about no personal possessions or decorations in the common area that could impede the access of emergency workers or the handicap. If someone sticks up a giant 4x8 flag in the middle of the breezeway, remove it under those grounds. "No flags" is just asking to have your head kicked in and stupid since there are a lot of ways to display a flag without impeding others.

Meh. If someone wants to fly a flag, I don't see any reason to assume them inferior, or yourself superior to them in any way. Grumpy elderly people do that. Hateful people do that.

And if a HOA, with the support of the residents therein, makes a rule against garish displays over a certain size, good for them too. People should decide what is best for their community within the greater context of city, state and federal law.

I do and ya pretty much that.

Now that I think about it, so do I! Not fluently, so I can't understand flag talk, but I just remembered that my father was born in Calexico and raised by Mexicans, and my uncle came from the Yucatan peninsula. My uncle Chuey was wounded in WWII, and my dad fought in Korea and Viet Nam.

Oh, also my next-door neighbors are Mexican, and they took an empty dirt lot and turned it into the nicest property in my neighborhood. I don't begrudge them flying the Mexican flag on Mexican holidays (they fly "Old Glory" the other days of the year), and I appreciate them raising my property values.

However, this thread isn't about Mexicans, and we're off on a tangent.
