Was sure I'd find the words "non-Newtonian fluid" somewhere in that article.

Do you assholes that point out that things are old news get a dollar every time you point it out or something? If not, why bother?

Zotfripper: I shot my oobleck

That would actually make for an interesting experiment. I might have to shoot some.

Cornstarch and water...not news, and not walking on water any more than walking on a wet rock. But "science" journalists need something to write about I suppose.

Cornstarch? In Canada we just wait until winter to walk on water.

I don't think so. You'd easily float in it.

At first, then you'd sink unless you were flawing your body constantly, otherwise a limb would sink and grab hold until it had you.

I know this is probably a suggestion one might get ridiculed for (ie me), but... What if The Hulk struck the mixture?

I would imagine that the energy from the impact would ripple through the suspension and destroy the container. But an interesting "thought experiment".

Yeah, but these guys did a better job explaining it. I didn't think they were trying to introduce many people to a new concept. In fact they said "We know we can do this, but not why. So we studied it and here's why."

It's GUK. I used to work in a toy store that sold it for $5 dollars a box until Moms figured out it was cornstarch with some food coloring.

If you place a platform an inch below the surface to run on, and keep your camera and lighting angles correct, you can achieve the effect of walking across actual water, instead of cornstarch and water.

For everyone saying "old news", the point is that the explanation is new, not the existence of the phenomenon.

This research was just published in Nature, which is why it's getting attention.

I don't think so. You would be less dense than the fluid, so you'd float pretty well, especially if you were on your back.

With a lung full of air, you can't even sink in water. I personally bob with my nose at the waterline.
Getting out of cornstarch and water would probably be a lot like pulling yourself out of a mud hole. You just aren't going to sink far enough into it to drown, but you sure could get good and stuck.

FTFY: when your body would strike the surface, that surface would be as hard as a rock. What happens after that is a moot point.
