Gunny Highway: I am having alot of trouble figuring out what exactly happened there. Only thing I can imagine is the ball bounced off his glove and he barehanded it as he fell back down... and his glove went flying over the wall. If only he could hit |

Gunny Highway: I am having alot of trouble figuring out what exactly happened there. Me too, did it hit his glove on the way down and pop back in? |

| Principal Clarinet Watched it 10 times - still can't figure it out. |

| Honest Bender Gunny Highway: I am having alot of trouble figuring out what exactly happened there. Same here. He goes up the wall, gets his glove under it. Then it looks like maybe his glove gets knocked off somehow and falls behind the wall. Ok. I'm with it up to that point. But the ball should be in that glove. Maybe the ball bounced out of his glove, onto his chest or something as he fell and he managed to recover it in his right hand? Now, granted it's been about 2 decades since I played little league, but I'm pretty sure my glove wouldn't come off my hand unless I wanted it to. Really confusing. |

Principal Clarinet: Watched it 10 times - still can't figure it out. The ball was in his right pocket and he pulled it out as he landed on his back. Almost sure. |

Looks like he missed the catch with his left hand (gloved) but the ball then fell between his body and the wall, kinda getting wedged into the elbow bend of his right arm as he starts falling back down. His left-hand glove appears to get snagged by the top of the wall as he jerks that hand downwards to reach for the ball pressed against his right side. When I first watched it I thought we were seeing a magic trick, that he had not caught the ball at all, that it had went over the fence but he had "palmed" a second ball and appeared to come up with the catch. Which would be an interesting trick, wonder if anyone has ever tried that in a home run catch before? |

Looks to me (hitting pause/play a lot), that the ball hits the wall and he traps it with his body then falls and grabs it with his hand as he falls. No catch! |

If you look at the last part of the video, the ball goes over the wall. End of story there. His LEFT glove goes with it. No more glove. Guy falls to the ground with the homerun ball still over the wall, and pulls out a 2nd ball from his RIGHT pocket. The homerun ball is still in homerun land behind the wall with glove. No catch. |

Yeah, I don't see a "baseball bulge" in his right pocket... |

Yeah, I don't see a "baseball bulge" in his right pocket... Oh I'm sure he always has a ball in his back pocket in case such a situation arises. I'm sure falling 5 feet ass-first onto a hard baseball would be really fun too. |

I bet you're the same guy who said "oh I'm sure someone in the crowd would just give Dewayne Wise a ball when he clearly didn't catch it and fool everyone into thinking he caught it." And if you fall ass-first from anything, why would you land on a ball in your right pocket? |

I noticed his glove missed too. However I figured, he may have pulled a ball from his pocket because that is not unheard of. That and he really can't explain why his glove went over and he had the ball. When they retrieved his glove, did they find a ball back there too? |

Looks like while he did lose his glove, the ball went between the wall and his body. As he was coming down it looks like he turned his shoulder to use his body to basket the ball so he could grab it. Just as his body was about to hit the ground you can see the ball in his hand. I still wouldn't call it an out because if he used his body and the wall to catch the ball then it is a hit and not a clean catch. |

Happened to fall into his other hand. You "ball in other pocket" people believe in UFO's, too? |

There a frame at 0:34 where the ball blur appears to be in front of the yellow tape and both the glove hand and throwing hand are clearly visible. The ball had to have either bounced off his arm or be trapped against his body, but in either case, had to have touched the wall before being controlled by the right hand, resulting in a hit. Of course, this is the result of numerous video reviews and a bit of speculation, so I am sure the play was ruled an out by the officials. |

Believe what you want, the ball he held up was in his right pocket, without a doubt. |
||
| DeltaPunch
It hits the top of the wall and deflects into his chest, where he then grabs it with his other hand on the way down: ![]() If you look closely at the last replay (same as the first one), you can actually see the white blur going into his chest on the next frame after the one I captured. |

While it's difficult to follow the ball once it's past the catcher's glove, if you freeze-frame at around 35 seconds you can see the ball in his right hand as he braces himself from the fall. If he had a ball in his pocket then he would have had to have reached in and pulled it out (ooh-er) while he was falling and before he hit the dirt. Also, his reactions when falling are a scooping motion consistent with someone trying to catch something close to them. Here's a zoomed screen shot, you can see the ball in his hand. ![]() I don't know anything about baseball so can't say if it's a legitimate catch or not, but the ball he came up with is the one the batter hit. |

hippyneil: I don't know anything about baseball so can't say if it's a legitimate catch or not If it touched the wall or ground before he had control of it it is not a catch. Else it is. fairly simple |

It was an impressive feat of athleticism, but I do not believe it was a catch. That ball must have touched the wall before he secured it, most likely bouncing off the wall and into his chest, or vice verse, before he could grab it with his right hand. |

Need a better camera view.. but to me it looks like it simply hit the glove, and went right through it, falling behind the fence. I keep seeing the same thing.. ball isn't caught. But then he has the ball.. whether it's the same ball or not.. can't say. Weird.. |

If you freeze the video at the right instant, you can see the ball hitting the wall: ![]() The ball hits the wall, he hits the wall. The force of the impact causes his glove to come off. On his way down he catches the ball with his right hand. Technically it should have been ruled a hit, but no umpire on the planet could have seen that. |

In other news, David Tyree had a football built into his helmet "Inspector Gadget" style, on the one-in-a-million chance he'd have the opportunity to make a game changing play with it. |

I downloaded the highest resolution version the YT video and stepped the catch one frame at a time in mplayer. The ball definitely missed his glove on the inside (his glove between it and the wall). His right (gloveless) hand was still on the wall as the ball disappeared. I think there's a good probability that the ball did not hit the wall before he "caught" it, but he definitely did not catch it with his right hand. I'm guessing it hit him just above the elbow, but maybe on his ribs in the same area, and then cupped/caught it in his elbow and pulled his hand up to palm it. I don't know the baseball technicalities of what touch what when and what you can do after that, but that was a damn fine catch in my view. |

This is therefore a caught ball because there isn't any way that the ump could see it. It adds a bit of unpredictability to the game. Now, if only we kept score of the umpires somehow... /MOAR STATISTICS |
