You can't blame them, before Tebow there has never been a single Christian player in the entire history of the NFL. |
||
| Calmamity Sure, why not? Evangelical Christians have already shown that they are easily manipulated rubes who are more than happy to give their money away for little-to-nothing in return. |

Isn't it south of Syracuse? It's not that far up north and in the middle of fark-nowhere. I've gone boating around Rouses Point when I was younger (a place from which a thrown rock will likely land somewhere in Quebec). Now THAT is upstate. /just picking nits. don't mind me. |

Anything above NYC is considered "upstate". People from above NYC will often disagree with this. I'm originally from Rockland County, which borders Westchester and Jersey. It's often called upstate, which strikes me as preposterous. But I really only want to put the line about ten miles north of me. So I'm preposterous too. |

Dafatone: Anything above NYC is considered "upstate". Yeah, and I always found that a little weird, but it's not exactly an entertaining and highly philosophical discussion to have, so in actual conversation with someone, I'm not going to go all Poindexter and say "well actually, *adjusts glasses*...." What I do find more than a little weird is that sometimes I hear people refer to places like Rochester and Buffalo as "upstate NY". Upstate of what? They're goddamn WEST of everything else in NY. |

There has never been a more accurate assessment of the different definitions of "upstate". I grew up in Westchester County, within a 25 minute drive of Yankee Stadium - so I laugh at the idea that I lived "upstate". |

To be fair, they're west and up from NYC. Which is kind of the decider here. I like to refer to my area (Rockland and Westchester) as Downstate NY. But then everyone laughs at me. |

Killer Cars: What I do find more than a little weird is that sometimes I hear people refer to places like Rochester and Buffalo as "upstate NY". Upstate of what? They're goddamn WEST of everything else in NY. You realize like 63% of the state's population lives in a relatively tiny area that's significantly south of Buffalo? Driving west from the NYC area gets you to NJ, PA and eventually OH. People from upstate need to learn that "upstate" is not an insult, some people down here yap about how upstate is so beautiful and they want to move up there, so it's annoying that everyone from WNY says "I'm not from upstate, I'm from Western New York". If we were trying to insult you we'd tell you you're a hick from the sticks. If I can't order an egg cream at a shiatty diner, you're upstate, simply because you're not in the NYC cultural area anymore. |

IHadMeAVision: simply because you're not in the NYC cultural area anymore. The fact you can recognize that NYC has a different cultural area than the rest of the state, but can't recognize Western NY and Capital Region/Upstate NY for having the same thing is probably equally annoying to people from WNY. NY is goddam enormous with probably five regions that have different immigrant growth patterns and have about as much in common with each other as they do with NY Metro. |

Plus, now we can all laugh at New City for having a dumb name. /it's the default city name in the original sim city. |

The wife and I lived in Syracuse for a year and a half before moving back to NYC, and they all scoffed when I referred to it as upstate. I'm sorry, but when one of the major hospitals in your city is called SUNY Upstate, you're upstate. I would also joke with them by saying "I'm from the city. I consider anything above 96th street Upstate." |

Speaking as someone living in CO, 20-60 mile community is not surprising. But, if it was on the East Coast that most likely (please correct me if I am wrong) would be surprising. The East Coast is significantly more compact and populated as opposed to the mid west. That being said, hell yea I would make a buck off it if I could. /There was a shop in Denver replacing the name tags from Brandon Marshal to Tim Tebow that made a decent chunk. |
