| In 1981, Duran Duran always assured they had a tour rider that explicitly required every state's Age of Consent law was known to them |

What states have an age of consent of 20 or 21? I think the drugs really were getting to him. They might have just told him whatever they wanted. |

| lunchinlewis And no brown M&M's! |

| Nabb1 I can't begin to imagine how much tail was thrown at them at that time. |

| Nabb1 Aarontology: Honestly, that probably was a smart move. For this reason: Nabb1: I can't begin to imagine how much tail was thrown at them at that time. Exactly. I remember when they were at the height of their fame. Teenagers and young girls were absolutely insanely in love with every member of Duran Duran. |

| TheBeastOfYuccaFlats Nabb1: I can't begin to imagine how much tail was thrown at them at that time. So much this. Seeing as in Europe the Age of Consent (used to be?) is all over the damn place, this seems like a good idea that just kept going into other countries. /also remembers the teenyboppers who would sell their left foot to be able to get within 100ft of Simon Le Bon. |

| downstairs MeinRS6: What states have an age of consent of 20 or 21? Things were different back in 1981. Almost all this stuff has conformed federally since then. Back then, some states had the drinking age set at 18, others 21, and probably even more varied ages. |

lunchinlewis: And no brown M&M's! Was that Van Halen's thing? I heard they requested that as sort of a gauge to see if all the other shiat had been taken care of. Their thought process being, if they really did get rid of the brown m&m's, then all of the things that really mattered (booze, cocaine, groupies, etc) would be there as well. |

I don't think even 30 years ago though that there were age of consents over 18... I might be wrong but.... And obviously they never played down south, or otherwise they'd have some 16's, 15's, and 14's on there. /honestly, I think he's making the 20 & 21 up, and they did have 14-16's, and just doesn't want to have the reputation some British rockers have gotten in recent years |

Back then, some states had the drinking age set at 18, others 21, and probably even more varied ages. Wrong answer. Age of consent in 1981 was at the maximum 18, and in most states well below that. Some were 14 or 15. No state had 20 or 21. The story is BS. The age has actually gone UP since 1981, not down. And it's not "federally conformed". Each state makes its own. The drinking age thing was because the Feds blackmailed the states and said "Raise it to 21 or you get no federal highway funds". |

I may have found one possible explanation - Some jurisdictions, such as The Bahamas, Bermuda, Chile, Greece, Paraguay and Suriname -have a higher age of consent for homosexual intercourse. In the United Kingdom for example the age of consent was originally 21 for homosexual behavior, while it was 16 for heterosexual behavior. Link |

I was partying in a Marriott in Charleston, WV when at least one of those turds came in the hotel bar which is across the street from the civic center and no doubt the hotel they were staying in. You would have thought Elvis from 1960 walked in the door. It was sad. |

Mark Ratner: lunchinlewis: And no brown M&M's! Was that Van Halen's thing? I heard they requested that as sort of a gauge to see if all the other shiat had been taken care of. Their thought process being, if they really did get rid of the brown m&m's, then all of the things that really mattered (booze, cocaine, groupies, etc) would be there as well. It was Van Halen, but the way I heard it it was less about booze and groupies and more about stage set-up pyrotechnics and the like. via Wikipedia: "On earlier tours, inadequate compliance by local organizers to the safety requirements of the rider had placed members of Van Halen's road crew in danger which was occasionally life-threatening. Because of these incidents, the band developed the M&M's demand as a means of checking whether the venue was properly honoring the terms of the contract to their satisfaction. Subsequently, if the bowl was missing, or if there were brown M&M's present, the band members would have reason to suspect that the venue might have cut corners or not properly honored legitimate technical and safety concerns listed within the contract. As a result, the band would be within their rights to inspect the technical side of the performance prior to going on stage, and/or request the venue redo their work properly." |

here's my csb... I was the guitarist for a group that played in my high school's talent show. We played "Flying High Again" by Ozzy and got third place. Out of 4 bands. The band that got 4th place might have beat us had their lead singer not been overcome with stage fright and refused to go on stage. They ended up performing a musical version of "I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow, and it really sucked. After the talent show, a fat girl (5'1", maybe 165 lbs.) who was in the 10th grade told us she wanted to hang out with us. Her, me and the rest of the band all drove to an out-of-the-way parking lot. She and I hung out in the back of my parent's minivan, shared a 6 pack of Mickey's wide mouths, and she let me finger her. So whenever I read stories about the debauchery of living a rock and roll life, I can totally relate. |

The no brown MMs was in the rider but it had nothing to do with the tech stuff. They did it just to be dicks and DLR has been lying about it for years. |

Their thought process being, if they really did get rid of the brown m&m's, then all of the things that really mattered (booze, cocaine, groupies, etc) would be there as well. According to the story I read, it was to make sure that the contract was fully read and implemented because they had some hideously expensive equipment that needed special setup, and if there were brown m&ms they knew that that setup hadn't happened. I doubt that cocaine was in a written contract, since you can't have a contract with an unlawful object (aka "goal" in non-lawyer talk). |

Some girls are just turned on by musicians. |

The sheets probably did read 15, 16, 18 instead of 18, 20, 21 but he is probably not dumb enough to admit to having sex with lots of minors. Sure it wasn't illegal but in the current "less than 18 = pedobear" climate, it wouldn't do much for the band's image to admit they were farking 15 year olds even if it was a quarter of a century ago. As far as the brown M&M goes, the checking technical details story seems legit. Who wants to eat a bowl of M&Ms that have been pawed through by someone not good enough to even be a roadie? Doubt they actually ate many M&Ms though surely someone hanging out backstage did. |

| SockMonkeyHolocaust MrEricSir: Not old enough to have listened to Duran Duran when they were new. Now I hear them all the time when I'm shopping at Safeway. It's kind of useless to argue with people who were in high school when a certain genre of music was big. Pointing out that Duran Duran is elevator music or that the whole partying to excess rockstar thing is childish like a wall poster with a supermodel washing a candy-red Porsche will never compete with the memory of the time that person fishbowled their friend's primer grey IRoc while "Hungry Like A Wolf" blared through the one speaker that worked before 3rd period gym. |

SockMonkeyHolocaust: that the whole partying to excess rockstar thing is childish Rock musicians partying to excess wasn't anything new. Just like getting dressed up in showy clothes and having long hair wasn't new to rock. Paganini had long hair and wore tight fitting shirts, vests and jackets with tails, not because it was the style of the time, but because he wanted to stand out. And impress the ladies. And he was far from the first musician to do that. And here's Paganini ![]() Here's John Taylor from Duran Duran back in the 80s ![]() The music may be different, but at the end of the day, musicians are musicians. |
