Ignoring the emergence of the Moog synthesizer as pioneered in rock by players like Keith Emerson, he began experimenting with a keyboard sound centred on the Hammond organ but heavier than a blues sound and often featuring distortion.

Lord pushed the Hammond-Leslie sound through Marshall amplification, creating a growling, heavy, mechanical sound that gave a rhythmic counterpoint to Blackmore's lead playing. It also allowed Lord to compete with Blackmore as a soloist, with an organ that sounded as heavy as a lead guitar. Said one reviewer, "many have tried to imitate [Lord's] style, and all failed."

I was recently at a funeral where the...how do I say this...guy running the show, best friend of the deceased, referred to "the dash." By "the dash" he meant the dash on your headstone between your birth date and your death date.

Nobody has to wonder about what John Lord did during his dash.

I was never a huge Deep Purple fan, but Highway Star was epic. RIP Keyboard Guy.

I was wondering why they chose this one to play today. It's a great classic, but you know, You'd think it'd be played when Neil Diamond dies....then it becomes apparent

Listening to the live version of "Lazy" from '73 as I type. Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were my introduction to artistically crafted rock. John Lord was one of the greats. Saw DP at the Tacoma Dome back in '84, great show through my weed got taken by security =(

I remember Lord in an interview, before he retired from Purple, saying that the 60's and 70's rock era was something that will never be repeated again, and he lamented that reality.
Sad.

I wish i heard his orchestrations music, they seems to be obscure.
since i have almost everything Keith Emerson composed, my focus was on his career.

Seen them on my 14th birthday on their perfect strangers tour. Been to hundreds of concerts, that was easily one of the loudest. Child in time, space truckin', highway star, no no no...Richie Blackmore was a wizard.

It will happen with increasing frequency. A lot of them died young. Keith Moon, Janis, Jimi, Jim Morrison, etc. Now we have the old guys. Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Bowie, etc, etc, They are all late 60's and older. They will all shuffle off before long.

If I had known that Deep Purple was from Britain, I'd forgotten it.

Time to go dig out my CD collection and find "When We Rock We Rock and When We Roll We Roll".

Really sad, Purple was one of the few organ/synth heavy bands that I liked.

Some of the other members of Purple had, uh, reputations, but I don't think I ever heard a bad word about Jon Lord, and man could he tear up the Hammond.

Time to fire up the live CDs!

Best $8 I ever spent. ELO almost eclipsed Purple that night. Loudest concert I have ever heard. I think my ears are still ringing from Blackmore's guitar. Amazing.

Can't wait to hear what kind of dueling organ solos Jon Lord and J.S. Bach will have going on the other side.

Babbitt died? Damn, is there a FARK link that I missed? Or is it another case of "ignore the musicians behind the Motown stars?"

Gillan said somewhere (I forget where I read it) that he just wrote the lyrics for things off the cuff in five minutes while totally wasted. Or made them up as he went along on first singthrough. While totally wasted. Then he'd have trouble remembering them so would make up some new ones. Eventually one version would get recorded, then he'd have to make a special effort to remember those (and sometimes forget them in concert).

Most old Purple lyrics are gibberish and it's best not think too much about 'em, just enjoy the music. Smoke on the Water is unusually coherent!

Yeah, MH was my very first LP too... in 1974. While all my 70s friends were raving about Zep and Sabbath, I was savoring the delicious tension-filled interplay between masters Lord and Blackmore... had the pleasure of seeing them a bunch of times too.

There's a billion heavy guitar bands out there. Jon Lord made Deep Purple a different band from all the others.

Deep Puprle was one of my earliest introductions to metal - long, long before the Loudness War, when metal was actually musical. Dammitsomuch, rock doesn't have to be compressed to death to farking ROCK. Case in point: Space Truckin' on the Made in Japan album, which has something that's missing from so much newer stuff: dynamics. Yes, they actually could play quietly just as well as they could play loud.
