Suck it, friends who didn't save their kids' cordblood.

My kids will now be able to gorge and booze their way to a stroke with no permanent ill effects!

You're welcome, sons.

Man, the umbilical cord and placenta are amazing... It positively blew me away when we had my daughter and the midwife took me over to show me everything. Of course, I think part of that was so I wouldn't freak out while they stitched my wife up, but it was still unreal to think about just how important a role these two components play in the development of the baby...

Whether it's stem cells or cord cells, we should just have a wordwide opt-out form that you sign. If you don't want them, that's fine, but don't potentially fark with my health or that of my family and friends because you are squeamish about what your Sky Wizard might think.

YES YES IT COULD..and as a Conservative it is not evil.. It's life comming from death (in the case of abortion) and life giving more life when new mommies donate it. :)

Ego edo infantia cattus: But, but... It's EVIL!!!

Didn't read TFA?

Nobody is against the use of cord blood or placenta cells. Even the folks with moral objections to embryonic stem cells are fine with this. Even TFA comes out and says it.

I know many of you are eager to laugh at those with whom you disagree, but it might not hurt to actually understand the issue first. There's simply no controversy about placenta and umbilical cord use for this kind of thing.

Exactly that is why I get annoyed. All this assumption. *shakes head.. Then I asked my liberal friends to donate their cord blood for research over the last 5 years..And was actually shocked at the no's I got. Anyway.

Unless it shows the potential to cut into the pockets of Big Pharma. Then it will get real evil, real quick.

In my experience, a lot of liberals really want to help other people, but there are some who only want the things they don't have to be redistributed evenly and don't care about actually helping anyone.

Honestly though, the idiots who are against stem cell research are typically against it because abortion and god. So... they aren't the type of folk who generally bother to learn about an issue before having an incredibly strong opinion about it. So the joke is still kind of funny.

Ha, someone actually got it. I was rather surprised to return to the thread several hours latter only to find an overwhelming amount of earnest butt-hurt and "You don't understand!" BS. Honestly, it's gotten to the point on fark that you can't even poke a little fun at a group of people without someone going off the defensive deep-end and calling you ignorant.

So in other words, someone else's perceived ignorance justifies one's own ignorance? You might be surprised as to how incorrect your assumptions may be.

How the hell did you get that from what is essentially "he was making a joke because there really are stupid people who think that because they choose not to know something basic"?

It's his assumption that people with a moral objection typically do not research the issue. That's flat bullshiat- sure, you can find folks who don't, but you can also find people who knee jerk the other direction.

If you tend to disagree with a given group it still does not allow you to stereotype.

As for it being a joke, more work was needed on it actually being funny.

akula: It's his assumption that people with a moral objection typically do not research the issue.

"Typically" is not "always" but, you know, even in this case the only people who have expressed any sort of MORAL outrage for the use of stem cells (embryonic or not) or any related advances have been people woefully naive about the issue and, usually (again, another word that means "not always"), deliberately so. If you have an economic objection or a scientific objection, those things tend to be rooted in a little bit more fact than a knee jerk moral reaction. But, let's be fair, these folks that he was making fun of HAVE come out against research on cells that were NOT embryonic stems cells because they thought they were embryonic stem cells due to a complete and deliberate lack of knowledge on the subject matter that would've been cured by simply paying the slightest bit of attention.

If you tend to disagree with a given group it still does not allow you to stereotype.

An accurate stereotype, while still being a stereotype, is still accurate. Stereotype is, on its own, a neutrally valenced word. Stereotyping because of something beyond someone's control (race, sexuality, etc.) is stupid, offensive, and almost always wrong . Stereotyping because of something that is well within someone's control (knowledge of an issue, reaction to an issue, etc.) is funny.

As for it being a joke, more work was needed on it actually being funny.

Which would be why I said "kind of funny" instead of "hilarious." It needed more of a set up, but it was still clearly a joke being made at the expensive of idiots.

I still haven't the slightest clue where you got your conclusions about me from my post though. You inferred entirely too much into it that was not there.

we donated our cord blood. who wouldn't?

also, epidurals are awesome. my lady-friend started feeling pain so an anesthesiologist came in to change her drip bag, but then there was an urgent situation in another room and she had to rush through it and leave. the not-actually-completely empty bag she left on the windowsill in the rush was fentanyl. hell ya.

We had no option to save the cord blood - too far away from civilization to store or transport it in time, but I wanted to. And to hell with any God that would have a problem with it.

I asked if we could save my sons cord blood (back in 2004) the hospital told me they didn't/couldn't do that.

/guess the tech wasn't there for them yet.
//hope they are able to implement it everywhere post-haste though.
///As far as God goes, He would probably want to know why you didn't use the helicopter/cord blood he sent you to save you from the flood/genetic disease.
//yes, it's an old joke.

[citation needed]

I don't doubt there's folks who are indeed knee jerk like that. However, there's equally as many who are thankful for the advances that have come about from non-controversial research on adult and placental/cord stem cells, even as they continue having moral objections to embryonic stem cell use. Just as there's folks (such as yourself, apparently) who believe that those with a moral opposition to the latter automatically complain about the former.

It's not going to surprise anybody that there's idiots out there, but they tend to be pretty equally distributed among the entire spectrum.
