Thankfully the federal government did not give into Cam Newton's demands for a billion damn dollars to rename it Cam Newton Field for the week.

What's the big deal? Bank of America pays the Carolina Panthers to have the stadium be named such, not the Obama campaign. Hell, they don't pay me so I will refer to it as "Praise Allah, Kill Whitey Stadium" from now on.

No, that is more similar to the NFL saying the 2014 Superbowl will be in NYC, even though the stadium is in NJ. This would be more similar to the subway stop at Willets Point saying Mets baseball park (or what ever it says) and not Citi Field.

It was never called that before. It was Ericsson Stadium when they opened it in 1995, then Bank of America bought the naming rights when that deal was up.

Yep.
It was originally Erickson Stadium, and most people called it that. But Bank of America Stadium just doesn't roll off the tongue, and noone wants to keep changing names every 10 years. You also can't leave out the word Stadium when you are referring to it. As in "I'm going to see the concert at Bank of America". It just doesn't work. (You can't just say "Panthers" either, but Panther's Stadium rolls off the tongue a little better). The only people who call it Bank of America Stadium are Panther's officials. Absolutely everyone else refers to it as Panther's Stadium. Hopefully come next February we will just start referring to it as Cam's House.

We also have "Bobcats Arena" (Not Time Warner Cable Arena), and "the Old Colloseum" (Not Bojangles Arena, and even though the "new" colloseum was torn down a decade ago).

This is the whole point of modern naming rights: to get you as much free press as you can.

/AT&T recently bought the rights to name the old Vet Stadium station here in Philly. I didn't think much of it until I was on a train and realized that all souh-bound subway trains in Philly list "AT&T" as their destination.

As long as they win the Superbowl I don't care if they take third-place in the division (bit of a tension builder really).

LOL at Fartbongo Field.

I'd think they would be a bit of a long-shot for the Super Bowl, but their day will come. I'm glad the Saints locked Drew up, but I think Cam's window will be opening as Drew's is closing and the Panthers should be a force to be reckoned with if they can build wisely around Cam.

Sorry, Falcons, you and Matty Hype will just have to go sit in the corner for a while.

Yeah, I don't actually expect a Super Bowl win, but its always fun to hope. Over the last few several years this is the only part of the year where Panther's fans really get to do that.

At least PNC Center would have rolled off the tongue- PNC Arena is just awkward as hell.

It needs a nickname.

If it was an airport, library, or road anywhere in the country, at least one Republican would have fought to rename it the Reagan _____.

This is amazing. Is the DNC paying for the use of the stadium? Then they can call it what the fark they want. This isn't some marketing deal, and the only people being "wronged" is Bank of America.

The phone company bought the naming rights to the ballyard in San Francisco, and the place changed names enough times in its first few years that people gave up and started calling it "the phone booth."

Really? Ya think?

So symbolically calling the field by the wrong name a few days makes it "all better"? Or do they just think most of their voters are too dumb to notice the field is named after a big evil bank?

Why stop there? They should rename North Carolina to "Panther State" because it's probably going Republican this time around and it would be embarrasing to the president if he lost the state he held his convention in.

/don't give me that corporate sponser BS. They had no problem using the Pepsi Center last time and hell, even Pepsi changed their logo to fit the occasion.

1. You are the one who used the words "all better", you can't charge someone else with failing to support your strawman.
2. They aren't "symbolically calling" the stadium by a different name. They are actually calling it by a different name in a couple of emails. There' s no evidence of any policy here, just two emails referring to the stadium the way locals do.
3. Would it be smarter if democratic voters chose to vote for Romney because of the name of a location an Obama speech takes place? Is this actually some kind of logic in your mind where this fact is of any significance?
4. Why would it embarass the president to lose the state the convention is held in?
The RNC has held their last four conventions in heavy Blue States. There's no expectation that the convention is supposed to deliver the state, though in this case there is at least the possibility.

Agreed. BoA Stadium should have found a real name long before this, anyone participating in this poutrage has a bird for hair. Hell, I'd even accept naming the stadium after the bank president who bought off the local politicians (or even the politicians themselves) as opposed to naming the stadium after some heartless company (admittedly I have less of an issue with naming building after heartless people, I can't explain it, it's not entirely rational on my part I admit).
