It's interesting that the video is called "Whale Shark steals fish", when really, it's the fishermen that are stealing the fish. If anyone has a right to eat fish in that ocean, it's the whale shark. |

FloydA: Meanwhile... [i105.photobucket.com image 400x487] That really needs to be captioned: "biatch stole mah fish." |

Video fail, they're not mammals. |

| FloydA Scrotumnal Equinox: Video fail, they're not mammals. That bugged me too. Someone heard that whales are mammals, and not fish, so they assumed that whale sharks must be mammals too because they have "whale" in their name. By the same logic, a housefly is a kind of residential architecture. |

| SeedFreak Is this considered 'tool use'? This is a learnt skill. |

And they consider that/them "good luck"??? How the fark is an empty net good luck? I suppose if you go to their house and put a flaming bag of poo on their doorstep, then ding-dong-dash, they'd feel like they hit the lottery! |

It is this big: ![]() It can open its mouth this wide: ![]() If I was a fisherman, I would consider it extremely good luck that it was eating my catch. |

For years people thought they only eat plankton, now they're eating fish? When does the first human casualty occur? Today? tomorrow? |

I remember seeing a news story some time ago about 3 fishermen in a boat about a mile from shore, when a whale shark surfaced and began circling their small boat tinny (boat). They noticed it had a fishing line/net tangled around it in such a way that it looked like the shark had grown into the net and was being constricted. One of the guys jumped in, sat on the back of the shark and worked the line free while the shark circled the tinny at the surface. Once it was free the shark did a 'victory lap' and swam back down into the depths. It was a fascinating story- there was footage but I can't find it for all the videos on youtube of people diving in after whale sharks. /They're not smart, but they clearly know an opportunity when they see one |

Grables'Daughter: It's interesting that the video is called "Whale Shark steals fish", when really, it's the fishermen that are stealing the fish. If anyone has a right to eat fish in that ocean, it's the whale shark. It's taking fish that have already been caught instead of catching its own fish. That's why it's considered to be stealing the fish. Kinda like how other animals in the wild will steal another animal's already caught prey. And does anyone have a good answer on just why the fishermen think that a creature they consider to be good luck is still good luck even as it's eating their already caught catch which is how they make their living? |

It's good luck because it's not eating the fishermen. //Not that whale sharks eat people, fishermen might not want to take any chances. |

Link Similar, but I distinctly remember it being a whale shark (this guy knows what I'm on about), and Australian fishermen. It was a story on an Australian news program, with handed over footage and interviews etc, a few years ago before they started routinely posting stories online. Indeed I am lazy, but I do know to search for the whole phrase whale shark when that's what I'm after.. |

Okay found it. The story is better than I described, even if the video cuts out before then end. |
