Kazakhstan, greatest country in the world,
All other countries are run by little girls!
Kazakhstan, number one exporter of potassium,
All other countries have inferior potassium!

I noticed some of the athletes listed their field of competition as "athletics". WTF is that all about?

from wikipedia

Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking.

Kazakhstan has been buying Russian athletes for a while now. They've put together some pretty good tennis teams as well, including Yaroslava Shvedova, who had that golden set at Wimbledon.

Track and field. Not too shocking that they are switching off the USA team.

Nolan is a very good 200/400 m runner. Though by going to Jamica, I am going to assume he is qualified in the 400.

Regina George is the dumb blond from Mean Girls, I had no clue she was real and a world class athlete.

Looks to be basically people who couldn't make their home team and are switching so they can participate.

Seriously. If you don't want to represent your own damn country in the Olympics, renounce your citizenship. And if you're too weak to make your country's team, you shouldn't be allowed to represent some other country unless you first establish yourself as a citizen there.

This is like when American politicians buy a cheap vacation home in podunk nowhere, just so they can run for office in a less contested district.

Now if they could just get rid of the idiocy that requires the medal ceremonies to be performed in French.

In French? WTF? Why not do them in Latin, too?

This kind of thing is often done so some of the minor countries can HAVE a team. Those weird-ass warm-weather nations in the Winter Olympics have a way of coming about due to someone from a major country wanting to compete and the IOC liking the concept of getting as many flags in the rafters as humanly possible. Which means a teacher from Philly wound up representing Thailand in cross-country skiing in Vancouver.

They had to spam this to the point of ridiculousness just to be able to hold the baseball competition in Athens. There was no other way you could squeeze Nick Markakis and George Kottaras into the squad of the host nation.

Because French is the international language of sports. Or rather, the language of international sports (hence acronyms like FIFA and FIBA).

No chance of making the US Olympic team but they would qualify in almost any other country.
