McCain claims there was nothing damning in Mitt's tax returns, just that Sarah Palin was a 'better candidate' than Romney. You're not helping, John

Dude! You miss a point like that, I'm surprised you're not spraying vinegar into the sky to clear up the contrails.

I honestly don't know how you can say Palin would make a better candidate than Romney. They were just short-sighted: they picked her before they knew how narrow and stupid that woman was.

I mean come on: Romney has deep flaws, but I think he at least is aware that the Queen of England is not the head of state and that Africa is not a country.

OK, GOP, we're willing to accept that as a loss. Truly, our bad. There's nothing in the tax returns that would doom Romney.

Palin is simply a better choice than Romney.

Sarah Palin.

Better than Romney(R)

I'd be willing to bet that McCain would've lost by a wider margin if Romney had been his VP. I think you're underestimating the stupidity of the American people...and the boot-quaking power of that soulful, incandescent, powerful, strong, intelligent conservative woman.

Point taken. She was a better candidate because of her charisma. No question.

The thought of Palin in office scares me far more than the thought of Romney in office.

If they do, it'll draw Palin out from wherever she's been which will bring the lulz.

And not too coincidentally, scare independents again.

For a large segment of the population, she was very well-liked. She is personable, folksy and perfectly willing to tell people what ever they wanted to hear. Even though she would be abjectly horrible to have in any position of power, she was still a better candidate.

IIRC Palin's fail (among the too many to count) was not knowing Queen Elizabeth is not the Head of Government. Is QE II not, at least nominally, Head of State?

At the time, that was probably the right assessment.

Remember, the McCain campaign was not doing well in the summer of 2008. (He was down by 5% at this point in the 2008 campaign.) He needed someone that could give his campaign energy and vitality: and Mitt Romney wasn't going to be that person. Neither was Tim Pawlenty, for that matter. Sarah Palin, for all her flaws, was a choice that gave the McCain campaign a new lease on life - look at the polls - the only time that McCain led Obama was after picking Palin.

And as it turned out, Palin crashed and burned, McCain's reaction to the Lehman collapse was bizarre, and the campaign quickly went to shiat. Romney wouldn't have had Palin's problems, but he wouldn't have added much to the equation either.

Romney wasn't picked as McCain's VP because of his taxes or his wealth - he wasn't picked because it didn't make sense at the time to pick him. The McCain campaign knew it needed a Hail Mary pass to win, and they went with Palin.

That's right up there with this one from the election of 1960...

MALE REPORTER: I just wondered if you could give us an example of a major idea of his (refering to VP Nixon) that you had adopted in that role as the, as the decider and, and final-

EISENHOWER: If you give me a week I might think of one. I don't remember.

Later in the same press conference...

EISENHOWER: No one can make a decision except me.

MALE NARRATOR: And as for any major ideas from Mr. Nixon:

EISENHOWER: If you give me a week, I might think of one. I don't remember.

That exchange became a TV ad for Kennedy.
