bingo! this is a clever one. the bike is an excellent all-purpose get-away, very smart indeed. with so many cameras in operation it's wise to have anonymous transportation into and out of the scene of the crime.

Somehow, I doubt they actually managed to weigh her accurately, and are just pulling random numbers out of their asses based on descriptions from witnesses, who likely gave a collective height range of between 4 feet and 6 feet, and weight between 50 pounds and 300 pounds... Eyewitnesses are not often very accurate in their estimates of people's age/height/weight...

That's pretty much it: I learned in places like Providence that a bike is a better getaway vehicle in a city than a car. And disposable, too. The gloves are a nice touch -- much less chance of leaving incriminating evidence. Not talking is smart, too. Keeping it simple is an old mob rule, and those guys are the real pros. The more you complicate a crime, the more chance you have of screwing it up or getting caught. The most successful criminals are the ones who do only what's necessary to get the job done and protect themselves. I've never heard of a smart bank robber, and I don't think this girl's smart for doing it, either, but she seems smarter than most of them.

Like what? Ones that can see through sunglasses and hats? Those don't exist yet. Or do you mean the quarter-million-dollar jobs used for television, that also weigh fifty pounds?

It might occur to you -- or might not, now that I think of it -- that the actual professionals who design bank security systems have already considered all the available options, and made their decisions based on reasoned consideration of what's achievable against what will actually deliver improved results. An expensive TV camera also can't see through sunglasses or hats, and probably doesn't deliver much other useful information above what a common security does that would justify the horrible cost.

But by all means, sit back in your basement and comment on how stupid experts are. It's a great old Fark tradition.

First, weight estimates for perpetrators is based on apparent build, not on a scale near the door. So you can rule out cement feet -- she hasn't actually been weighed.

150# is a little over for her build, but not by much -- only about ten pounds over, for someone with an athletic build. And cyclists have a lot of their weight in their thighs, yes. Someone who relies on a bike to escape a serious felony probably has more than a passing familiarity with them.

Now, about you: If you're "slightly more than half her weight" at five feet tall, then you're about 80 lbs. Which, for 5', suggests that you're seriously underweight, even for someone with a 'small frame' -- maybe even dangerously underweight. There are exotics out there with freakishly small frames -- one of my friends is like that. But it's unlikely you're one of them. What does your doctor think about your weight? I'm being totally serious here, not snarky. Being seriously underweight poses real health risks that you should know about, and perhaps do something about. And though it's straying to say this, I also feel the need to tell you that if you're holding your weight down to appeal to boys, well, boys like that don't deserve you. Anyone worth being with will respect you for who you are, not who they may want you to be. Kate Upton is considered 'fat' by some people because she's not anorexic. In truth, she's much healthier than most of her colleagues. And Marilyn Monroe wore a 14.

You're kind of touchy on the subject of cameras. I just got a cheap video camera to install on the roll cage of my car from GoPro. Does sound and fairly decent resolution with a frame rate that at least gives the impression of being smooth. Weighs a few ounces, shock resistant and the case helps to protect it from water. It provides much better images than the pictures you see in security cameras.

So I can take better videos with a $300 camera in a harsh environment than a security camera that cost a bit more and sits in a protected climate controlled environment. I lack the budget to afford better than I have but compared to the stills from the bank depicted in the article, I'm not doing too bad.

Camera technology has made tremendous progress over the last ten years. It just doesn't seem to have made it to security cameras yet.

Maybe you're right. Maybe an entire global industry is dumber than you are. But it seems unlikely.
