He seemed to produce pieces that were well-reasoned and nuanced, two qualities that seem to be in short supply these days, especially in political discourse.

At a time when "nuanced" tends to describe a position that is contorted to justify abandonment of principle, the last word I would use to describe Raspberry is nuanced. Well-reasoned? Absolutely! But I would use principled rather than nuanced. For several decades now, partisanship - on both sides - practically demands abrogation of principle in favor of some nuanced position, Raspberry stood firm on his well-reasoned principles, partisanship be damned.

It distresses me that I've only just now heard of him. Sounds like someone who could have allieviated a lot of my white-girl ignorance.

He's trying to conceal how incredibly racist he is, but it backfired.

The 'Raspberry Effect' is in reference to Rush Limbaugh, whom William Raspberry despised until taking a challenge to listen to Limbaugh's show for a week. WR did a mea culpa and did indeed print an article that Limbaugh was and is not homophobic/racist etc.

You really are Mr Right, "principled" is a much more appropriate word to describe his pieces, thanks.

Thank you for taking that in the spirit intended. After I posted I hoped you wouldn't be offended by my tone. You paid Raspberry a compliment and then I posted something that sounded like I wanted to pick a fight. I didn't. So thanks for being so reasonable and understanding.

His columns were thoughtful, well-reasoned, intelligent, and down to earth - and never hostage to partisanship.

One of my favorite journalists. We could use a lot more like him.

"Fifty years after Brown, we should have learned that there is no magic in white classmates. The magic lies at the intersection of educational opportunity and attitude-the coming together of teachers who know how to teach and children who are ready to learn. No one thing-not the ballot, not changes in school governance, not desegregation-will produce that happy confluence. We have to demand that the schools get ready for our children. But we also have to make sure, using every resource at our disposal, that our children are ready for school."
