I don't know. He makes it sound interesting enough that I'll give it a chance. I kind of like how they are playing with Herman's constant decay vs. Lilly's immortality. Probably crap, but I'll watch an episode or two.

I am tentatively hopeful. Also, other than the fond memories in my spank bank, there is nothing to ruin about the Munsters.

So some reboot of some dopey old sitcom about a family of montsers is going to be ruined by.....adding more classic monsters? What a fragile world you must live in, subby.

Only the specific designs are copyrighted. The characters themselves are public domain, for the most part.

The copyrights on Frankenstein (published 1818) and Dracula (1897) are long expired, which is why there are so many versions of the stories out there in film.

I'm sure the classic character designs will be slightly updated, just like how Disney does incremental
changes to their classic characters and re-copyrights them periodically (annually?).

Hadn't thought of that angle, but that would drive DVD sales better than showiings on TCM, wouldn't it?

According to Wikipedia, Universal had been trying to get a humourous cartoon series going with their
classic monsters since the 40s, but I'm also sure that once word got around that the Addams Family
show was being developed they fast-tracked it.

While I overall like the Addams family better, I have a soft spot for THE MUNSTERS, especially
Grandpa's lab.

In the original pilot episode of The Munsters, Lily was named Phoebe and blatantly modeled after Morticia.

He earned himself a pass. If anyone can do it, it's the guy who made Pushing Daisies.

FTA: It's an ensemble, but the emotional point of view is from Herman because it really is about a father who is realizing his child is taking after the other side of the family. He has so few things in his life that are his, and his son Eddie was one of them -- and now Eddie's more like Grandpa than he is Herman. Everything is a metaphor for something that you can identify with in a relationship; the fact that Herman is in a constant state of decay, and he's married to someone who doesn't age. We get to play with all those insecurities. The fact that he was made by his father-in-law and then has to live up to those standards; he's always trying to find his own identity.

Somebody explain to this moran what comedy is.

All the classic monsters became jokes inside of 5 years, when they each met Abbot and Costello in turn.

Nothing to ruin about any of them. And praise be to gunga galunga for bringing up Monster Squad, which, though a comedy, still made the monsters pretty good.

If Count Chocula, Frankenberry, and Boo Berry can't ruin them, nothing can.

It's King Lear meets the Last Unicorn meets Woody Allen.

I would hate on this, but "Wonderfalls" is ridiculously good. So were "Pushing Daisies" and the only episode of "The Amazing Screw-On Head," which was so good that it led me to seek out the book.

He might pull this off, but only because it is him and not some typical hack.

I liked the Addams Family, better, as a kid, but I'd ALWAYS watch the Munsters when it was on (they were both in endless syndication when I was a kid).

Addams family was based on Charels Addams comic strip that ran in the New Yorker during the late 1930's.

I hope they don't screw this up, I hope they do it in black and white though or at least get rid of that garish blue coloring they did in the 70's. ICK
