If only the lady on the scooter approached with such caution.

I find this oddly touching. Maybe because my first memory of an escalator is of me being maybe 3 years old and being scared to death of stepping onto one going downward. My mom had gone onto it without me without noticing that I had balked at the top. So here I was in the mall, terribly young, staring at this impossibly high, impossibly long, magically moving staircase, and I was now all alone. Frightened by the prospect, I started wailing. My mom looked up to see that she had left me at the top of the escalator, but she was already committed to the entire ride down. When she got to the end, she started calling up to me to just step onto the escalator, but I was just too afraid, and I wouldn't budge. Finally, a kind black gentleman in a suit walked up to me and said he'd hold my hand on the way down so I could be with my mom. That made me feel better, and we went down the escalator together, and I was reunited with my mother. So it's kind of familiar and touching. I can really relate to this guy.

Except, I was 3 years old, and he's a grown man. What a coward.

The music and the hair and the clothing made it feel like the 70s...

We take a lot of our advances for granted in this society of ours (See Louis CK's rant), and it's pretty clear that this gentleman had never seen a device such as this. I'm sure calling him names is not an appropriate thing to do. I've worked in the field of computing for almost 30 years and I still have to pick my jaw up off the floor every now and then while marvelling at exactly what the hell we're coming up with.

But hey, a voice of reason doesn't belong on Fark. Or any website for that matter.

I thought the vid was pretty neat. I liked how he just stood and observed until a crowd started to gather and coax him to have a try. I wish there was audio though. I'd like to know what he said that made everyone laugh.

I recall a vid I saw on Fark some months back of someone (I think a woman) trying to use an escalator and practically falling backwards. I was kinda expecting this guy to do the same. He seemed to get the general idea of what to do fine though. Maybe the lady in the other vid I saw was just dumb as rocks.

That's awesome. It is so rare to see a moment of complete, child-like, innocence on a grown person.

Of course that's impossible, since escalators were only invented in 1998.

I would pay money to see what hilarious antics ensue when someone hands him a Coke bottle.

I think I know the video a while back that you are thinking of. It's my understanding that the handrail moved at a different speed than the escalator, which caused her to fall, because she wouldn't let go of the hand rail. She wasn't too smart either, but its a good excuse.

He has managed to wear contemporary clothing and navigate the department store just fine, but is befuddled by the escalator? Is he going to go outside and drive away in his car or catch the metro bus? It seems that if he hadn't ever encountered an escalator then he probably hadnt encountered many aspects of his new environment. Where are his aids/handlers?

If he's from a small town, it's quite possible there are no escalators there.

My home town has no working escalators. I happen to know there is one that used to go down to the basement of the Woolworths, but it was shut down and deactivated decades ago.

There are plenty of older people, especially on the nearby reservations, who would have never seen an escalator except maybe that one.

Contemporary clothing?
It looks like he just got done shopping at a Goodwill and had no idea what to buy.

This was fun to watch.

A side note: I was not aware that escalators had been around for a really long time until I watched some Charlie Chaplin recently: http://video.google.com/videoplay?doci d=-499641455983283459

Just hadn't really thought about it before.
