The truth that while Joe Paterno covered up the abuse of children so did numerous university officials, Board members, local police, county DA, former PA AG and current PA Governor Tom Corbett, members of the Second Mile Charity, and most of all; those closest to Sandusky. It's almost like this story isn't just about a pedophile and a football coach.

Were anyone of those folks you mention bronzed and placed for public display?

The Paterno family will be happy to know that Penn State plans to keep Joe's name on the school library.

It's strange, it's almost like the statue was the physical representation of the pre-Freeh report memory of JoePA, and that with it's removal those closest to him(like his family) would feel that it's removal was an attack on not only the patriachry of their family, but a, until then, beloved person for those connected to PSU for 50 years. It's like, and this is weird, that while JoePA was guilty of protecting a child molester, he was still loved by hundreds of thousands of people, most of all his family.

"uncover the full truth"? Is that like saying OJ will resume the hunt for the real killers after he gets out if jail?

So, I guess the rules are:

1. Trayvon and/or Zimmerman thread: DRINK!
2. JoePa thread: DRINK!
3. JoePa coving up Zimmerman raping Trayvon's corpse thread: Empty the bottle, buy another, empty that, weep.

Zimmerman is so three weeks ago, hell JoePA is boring now. Now it's "Are movies making young people kill?" threads.

Look, he wasn't an ignorant observer, as he claimed when he was alive. For that reason alone they should take it down, or put it up somewhere where it isn't associated with the university. You can still honor the football program while expressing disapproval of his actions. He did plenty of good while he was alive, but this is a serious enough transgression to stain him forever with a giant asterisk whenever his name is mentioned.

Exactly. And it was precisely that insane cult of personality and deification of a man and a football program that were material facilitators of these crimes. They deserve to be torn down.

look, I understand that the Paterno family has it rough right now. they lost their father, they found out Joe Paterno wasn't the hero they thought he was and now they're watching whats left of his legacy be scrubbed from Penn State campus. Not to mention that they've gone from near divinity status to having their family name dragged through the mud. none of that is easy to endure....so I get where the anger is coming from.

but...seriously folks....sit this one out. just go on vacation for a while, drink some rum, cry on a beach somewhere while the sun sets over a tropical island.

And them leaving will only make it look worse.

At this point, NOTHING is going to make the Paterno family look good. getting out of town for a bit and keeping their heads down would at least take them out of the line of fire.

They deserve the line of fire. They defended his horrid decisions. If my father, mother, or sister did likewise I would disown them immediately. I've disowned one of my sisters for much less, as did my wife with her brother.

Blood may be physically thicker than water, but the metaphor does not hold for rational individuals.

They wouldn't have to do that if someone in their family with balls, would stand up and denounce the actions of their loved one. This is their lives at stake here. It isn't going to go away by going on vacation for awhile.

They still don't understand, by Joe's actions of closing an eye for so many years, how he was actually hurting them in the long run.

By keeping these crimes a secret, he was farking his own family at the same time. Hell, he was probably glad he was dying knowing he would leave them with the tab.

Take as many as you can down and make a fricking example out of them. NEVER COVER UP OR IGNORE CHILD MOLESTATION. There's your morality lesson.

The strain happens when you feel the irrational need to defend him. Its stupid. I moved 900 miles away from my family for reasons that were FAR less than child rape and all that. If you want to interview me on my why my sisters are coonts and drama queens, I'll tell ya. Not that hard.

Exactly. My dad is a prick. It didn't take me that long to realize it, and its not that hard for me to vocalize it. Its just life. In my life (37 years old) I've gone through much tougher stuff than realizing the sheer majority of my family consists of bad people. I don't think... heck, I know... I don't have heroic emotional strength... but abandoning the drama wasn't that hard. When I'm out at a bar and someone asks me about my family, I'm pretty blunt and honest.

You're just jealous because your life is so full of worthless chaff-like people that's you've never met someone who's made an impact. Least of all someone who made a BIG impact.

So you rail against the idea that someone can have a positive influence on 10s of 1000s and still do bad things. You have to destroy Joe's statue so you can sleep well at night knowing no situation is more complicated than the pathetic black and white little dichotomatic illusions you wrap around yourself.

And the sick thing is, you sit here cawing hate for a lump of inert metal from high atop bullshiat mountain when you live in a country with money and symbolism that idolizes men who bought blacks like horses, shot their fellow countrymen, and commited genocide. Have you ever heard read a history book? Trail of Tears ring any bells? Washington's 300 slaves? Jefferson's addiction to the darkberry? Lots of those "good" people have childrens' dark blood on their hands. Let's pull their face off the money, too. Otherwise you're just being a hypocrite, cherrypicking sins based on how recent as opposed to how dark they are.

Nope, but if you've ever dealt with child molestation (I have)... the results are pretty damn close. He didn't end anyone's life by his own hands. Thats for sure. But he certainly allowed something to happen that farked up the lives of many people. I'd say we're splitting hairs here.

well...no. see, the reasoning goes like this - if you achieve 'great things' but do so at the cost of increasing human suffering then you are evil and evil should be punished. for most people, PSU's football achievements are invalidated by the coverup of serial child rape. which, oddly enough, gives me hope for mankind.

And the sick thing is, you sit here cawing hate for a lump of inert metal from high atop bullshiat mountain when you live in a country with money and symbolism that idolizes men who bought blacks like horses, shot their fellow countrymen, and commited genocide. And seem to think that a good record on the football field should excuse a coverup of over a decade of pedo rape. I'm not sure what point it is you think you're trying to make.

Therefore we should turn a blind eye to people whose inaction facilitate and enable child molestation. You Paterno/Penn State fans are now to be called the Brain Trust due to your awesome reasoning skills. I can't even count the logical fallacies in that statement. I think you hit them all.

I don't in any way "rail against the idea that someone can have a positive influence on 10s of 1000s and still do bad things." Hell, it's what we're all talking about in here. The question is whether the evil of ignoring/condoning a child molester in his midst for years is outweighed by his running a successful football program. Most people in here, myself included, feel that it is not.

I'm not saying to scrub Paterno from the record books like some general who offended Stalin, but knowing what we now know about the whole man and what he allowed to happen, and the way he was careful to secure his financial future just before the whole thing hit the fan, isn't it a tad shameful to imagine that statue still standing there, glorifying his athletic achievements as if that was all that mattered in the world? Get over your vicarious glory days, coach-worshippers.

Clever how Jay Paterno uses the canard of a desire for the "full truth" knowing full well that it is unattainable when the key figure to such a truth is now on the other side.

\BTW, am I the only one who thinks JoPa would still be alive and preparing for the 2012 season if the Sandusky issue never came to light?
