| factoryconnection Almost as ironic as this statistical turn-of-phrase is the fact that the "IRONIC" tag has been correctly applied. |

I guess I don't get what the big deal is, Paterno was a shiatty coach that hadn't won anything since 98. Says so right here in this record book. |

Due to the sanctions, the last Penn State QB to lead the team to a winning record was Mike McQueary and with any luck he'll still have that record in a decade or two. |

You know I'm starting to think the Big 10 needs to drop Penn State. They're dragging the whole conference down with being terrible at football. Sure, we let Ohio State get away with a few win-less seasons here and there, but they also weren't covering up for pedophiles on the side. Come on Penn State, you're making the Big 10 look bad. Learn how to win a farking game in this millennium. |

Not to downplay the seriousness of this situation, but, what NCAA rules were broken? |

upndn: , what NCAA rules were broken? Well as for explicit rules, football players were disciplined differently from other students, that's not allowed by the NCAA. The athletic director went along with this. This per NCAA rules indicates a lack of institutional control. As for Sandusky that falls under ethics and morals clauses. |

upndn: Not to downplay the seriousness of this situation, but, what NCAA rules were broken? NCAA charter has a section pertaining to upholding "honesty, integrity and fairness" both in the athletic department and how it relates to the university as a whole. Covering up for a serial child molester kinda runs contrary to that point. |

It still seems to me that the NCAA has over-stepped their bounds. This has opened a can of worms that could affect every major program. As for the lack of institutional control, PSU demonstrated total institutional control. Just afraid that there will be future ramifications for other institutions as this is a precedent for the NCAA to step in and force their will on things that used to be out of their jurisdiction. |

Good? This was a situation that needed to be nuked from orbit. |

Not that I think Penn State didn't deserve a massive punishment, but negating all their wins just seems to be in denial of reality. Penn State teams *did* win those games. You didn't see MLB trying to declare that all of Pete Rose'shiats were all actually double-plays, or the NFL declaring all of O.J. Simpson's rushing plays to be 5-yard losses. |

I saw him play in !997. Penn State was undefeated and ranked #2 in the nation. Got his ass served to him by Michigan 34 to 8. That score hardly even shows how thoroughly PSU was dominated on their own field. But the story gets even better. In 96 Michigan had a defensive end who had three times as many sacks as the rest of the line combined, but he was an arrogant discipline case. Carr got rid of him. Michigan won the 97 national championship by running a very clean program. |

You didn't see MLB trying to declare that all of Pete Rose'shiats were all actually double-plays, or the NFL declaring all of O.J. Simpson's rushing plays to be 5-yard losses. See here's the thing: This only matters to Joe Paterno and Joe Paterno's legacy. The players? They don't give a shiat, they've been through it, they know what happened. It won't affect their future employability or enjoyment of life one iota because they didn't officially win as many games at college. On the other hand, this officially wipes clean the record book of Joe Paterno being the winning-est coach in Division 1 football. He killed his own legacy of "honesty and integrity" with his actions, and once the current student population comes to their senses (say... 5 years after they leave PSU) JoePa's only legacy will be that he enabled a predator and child rapist to continue victimizing people for more than 10 years after he had a chance to stop it. Exactly as it should be. |
