The ironic thing is if the conservatives had gotten behind the civil unions option, from the beginning, that's where everything would have stalled. Even most of the gay rights advocates would have been fine with that, since they thought that was the only "realistic" option.

It's because the right fought this so utterly hard that the proponents eventually decided that marriage was the only option that would ensure their rights, so that's where the debate moved. Trying to bring it back to civil unions is disingenuous and wholly insufficient.

Were, I unnoticed. The gay community is pretty conservative politically. If the GoP can at least get to the point where they don't treat gays as subhuman they can probably take a solid bite out of that voting block.
