Wrong Nash. MrJesus is referring to a hockey trade that happened today.

I assume his sympathetic attitude about Paterno in the book is the same as it was in this article.

Came in here to point this out. There's saturation, there's over-saturation, there's over-over-saturation, and now this. Seven today, three yesterday (even if one was inexplicably left off the sports tab), one more on Friday. What's the record for greenlights on one story? This has to be creeping up on third by now (as I'm pretty sure 9/11 and the daily Arab Spring threads are solidly 1 & 2)....

The guy had just died and he was practically in the room when it happened, and the Freeh report was 6 months away. Given that Poz is nothing if not thoughtful and reflective -- and more than happy to change his mind about things when more evidence emerges -- I'm pretty certain that this will not be an Paterno apologia or hagiography.

I lost a ton of respect for Joe Posnanski's handling of all of this. He's always been soft, but he went completely off the deep end in this case. There is no way that this book won't be one of the worst things ever written.

Hope the $750,000 was worth your reputation.

That's a pretty impressive claim considering Poz has made - what - two? three, maybe? public statements about the story since it broke.

If he can incorporate the Freeh report findings into the biography and still meet the publishing date, I'll be impressed.

If the latter third of the book doesn't substantially reflect those findings, it will deservedly be slaughtered. But it does only need to be the last third, as Paterno's career was so damn long.

BTW can you point out any Penn Sate booster or official coming out condemning those who harassed the first Sandusky victim who came forward so badly he's now in witness protection? Or any who offered to make amends for the tv truck that was overturned when Paterno was fired?

You're an idiot. I do condemn the actions of the community that harassed the victim into hiding, but I also condem YOUR actions as detractors of Penn State FOR THE SAME REASON: I oppose mobs. I'm always going to be against the actions of large groups acting on hot emotion.

Second, why should I pay for an insured TV truck that was damaged whilst I was on another continent. A minor act of vandalism (again by a mob, which I oppose) doesn't void my opinion until I offer to pay for it.

This was never about football. It was about resoponsibility. But the mob has shown they don't care about the children any more than due process or logic. Yet again it comes down to blood. 14 seasons, $60M, and 4 years no bowl games is nothing. It's so knee jerky and overreactive half of it can probably be undone. Or not. Who cares? What grinds my gears is that ya'll are trying to demonize Penn State's entire student body and staff and alumni because of the actions of a handful of people WHO AREN'T THERE ANYMORE. It's the exact logic Adam Carolla uses in a joke he likes to recycle about bombing Germany again for WWII, the difference is he's not serious.

Well, as far as I can find not one booster has pulled their support after what came out about Sandusky So it's not like I'm expecting any of them to have any sense of propriety or decency. Their silence is approval.

You're the one not helping by sticking up for the indefensible, by the Desmond Howard, who knows a bit more about playing college football than any of us does, has this to say

"The one point that people continue to make, that really leaves a bad taste in my mouth is about the players and how the players shouldn't have to pay the price for what happened.. as if they don't have a choice. You know, you read some tweets and some messages and people say, 'Hey, remember the victims.' Well, I challenge you to remember the victims, but think about the victims, and think about how they were victimized. Think about what they had to go through when this burly coach was victimizing them. Add some substance to that symbolism and they didn't have a choice. Those damn victims didn't have a choice. Why? Because of the culture at Penn State University, particularly in the football department. Now these football players today, who are at Penn State, they have a choice. If you grew up loving Penn State Nittany Lions football and you always wanted to play for Penn State, guess what? You can stay, and you can represent Penn State and wear that uniform proudly and you will have a chance to earn a degree from Penn State University. But, if you like to play in the postseason and all of the luxuries that come along with that sort of opportunity, then you can transfer out today and go to another university and live out those dreams. The players today have a choice. The damned victims didn't."

Actually, most of us were demonizing the football program because no one at Penn State controlled it. The Penn State family that is being demonized is earning it on an individual basis by reacting like paranoid, mindless sheep about the whole thing.

The sooner you realize that those of us with distance from the situation have an actual perspective founded in logic and facts, the happier you'll be.

Enjoy stage 2 while it lasts though. Anger is fun.

This. No need to cancel the book completely; just bring the new revelations about how the man led his life into things. Maybe subtitle it "The man who changed the country, one Sandusky victim at a time."

The sense of denial and the culture of look the other way for the sake of the football team are very much there. Without those Sandusky was caught and stopped many victims ago. With them still in place its a great platform for abuse of any sort to spring from. It isnt about punishing those present now. Its about tearing down that platform.

Most of that was before the Freeh report came out. Before that new info I could see how someone with alot invested in Penn St Football could still want to believe in JoePa. The book will need an afterward that covers the new info and puts his legacy in perspective to be relevant.

Announced in March 2011 as "a biography of America's winningest college football coach, who changed the country one football player at a time," the book will enter the marketplace at a moment when the name of Joe Paterno, the late Penn State coach, has gone from revered to radioactive.

Just fancied having a couple of shots at translating this to English.

Joe Posnanski lives inexorably in a world of lollipops and rainbows. He's completely incapable of rationally dealing with -- much less cogently writing about -- the stark, horrific realities of serial child rape, institutional corruption, cover-ups and blatant, money- and power-driven evil. That, of course, is one of the many reasons to like Joe Posnanski.

He can deftly tug at your heartstrings in penning a lilting, nostalgic missive, but he's no mystery or horror writer ... and Paterno's biography, like it or not, is now a horror story of such abject depravity that Stephen King himself might blush. Poz himself admitted on his blog a few months back that when a writer undertakes a biography, the bulk of the text and understory are already written ... the author's task lies in interviewing people associated with the subject in order to complete the life story.

Unfortunately for Joe, his entire plan blew up in his face through no fault of his own. However, Poz himself fanned the flames with kerosene by vehemently denying the reality of the Sandusky/Paterno story after it broke (someone had rudely taken away his lollipops);
now that the book is on the eve of its release -- one only needs to see that the book has the full blessing of the [blind, delusional, power-drunk, unapologetic] Paterno family to know that it cannot possibly be a balanced, fair, full biography of the fatally-flawed demigod. This book won't be worth the trees that died for it.

I'm sure the $750K will spend just the same, though. It should buy a helluva lot of lollipops.

Simon & Schuster might be able to sell the Paterno book to still delusional Penn State fans, but they really ought to write it off as a loss and never publish it. It can't be worth the hit their reputation would take.

Sometimes, the mob isn't acting merely on hot emotion. Sometimes, the mob is even right. We've got proof in a court of law behind us; all we're doing now is crying for justice against people who think football is worth sheltering child rapists for.
