I'll repost this here because it applies. For the Paterno family to insist upon due process from the NCAA is just assinine

The NCAA is a collection of schools that got together to improve college sports image due to the dangers inherent in early versions of football. After many deaths on the field Teddy Roosevelt even considered banning the game. The NCAA evolved out of the efforts to clean up the sport so that the schools could continue to play football.

Today the NCAA is not just an elective governing body it is a brand name that has an image to uphold. It has a right to protect that brand however it sees fit as a private entity and a duty to it's shareholders (it's various member schools) to punish members who damage that brand.

So STFU

How Sandusky was able to get away with his crimes for so long has yet to be fully understood, despite the claims and assertions of the Freeh report.

That's some potent cognitive dissonance they have going on there.

the Paterno family should get used to the fact that Joe Paterno's legacy was corrupted and destroyed by his own actions. NOTHING they can say will fix that fact. accept it and move on with life.

People have a very hard time accepting that a family member acted reprehensibly. Just look at Demjanjuk's family.

how does it go? Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance? I think the Paterno clan is past the denial phase and into the anger one.

Well, from a purely rational perspective, their odds of a good legacy was zero if they accepted it. They can retain some of the less perceptive and more weak-willed among Paterno's cult by continuing to carry this line.

And, maybe change their family name to something a little less reviled, like "Hitler".

Whoopi Goldberg defends child-rapist Roman Polanski because he did so much "good" in the form of (I admit) excellent movies. Polanski drugged and raped a 13 year-old girl and then fled to France to avoid prosecution.

/I think 13. 12? 14? You get the point.

Her quote was that Roman Polanski did not "rape" rape her. That is he wasn't hiding in a bush with a knife to abduct and have intercourse with a stranger, instead he drugged and molested a teenage daughter of a friend of his at a party at his mansion. So it wasn't real rape.

Hmmm.... This is strange. The University or NCAA didn't consult with Paterno's family AT ALL? I thought ALL prosecutors, judges, panel members, and decision makers ALWAYS consults with the families of the accused or shamed?

I think they may be the biggest Kool-Aid drinkers of all.

fark Jay Paterno. Own up to the fact your dad didn't do his job as a decent human being and was more focused on football than protecting kids from a rapist.

Also, I'm tired of people saying "This hurts everyone in Happy Valley". Well fark them! You reap the benefits of JoePa's actions, now you must suffer because of his actions.

Having a business model of "If the football team succeeds, we will make money!" is stupid.

"...How Sandusky was able to get away with his crimes for so long has yet to be fully understood, despite the claims and assertions of the Freeh report."

Here's a hint:

Feb. 26, 2001
Schultz wrote to Curley about a three-part plan that included talking "with the subject asap regarding the future appropriate use of the University facility," ... "contacting the chair of the charitable organization" and "contacting the Department of Welfare."

Feb. 27, 2001

Curley wrote "After giving it more thought and talking it over with Joe yesterday, I am uncomfortable with what we agreed were the next steps. I am having trouble with going to everyone but the person involved. I would be more comfortable meeting with the person and tell them about the information we received and tell them we are aware of the first situation."

From the family's statement on the statue removal:

Tearing down the statue of Joe Paterno does not serve the victims of Jerry Sandusky's horrible crimes

Appropriate, since Joe Paterno didn't serve the victims either.

From today's statement:

the President, the Athletic Director and the Board of Trustees accepted this unprecedented action by the NCAA without requiring a full due process hearing before the Committee on Infractions

Also appropriate - rather than challenging the sanctions, they decided to look the other way.

Joe Paterno was never interviewed by the University or the Freeh Group.

You know who else wasn't interviewed about his knowledge of crimes under his leadership?

They probably should get a head start on the "bargaining" phase for the upcoming contract nullification PSU will likely hit them with.

The NCAA never contacted our family or our legal counsel. And the fact that several parties have pending trials that could produce evidence and testimony relevant to this matter has been totally discounted.

Don't worry. There'll be plenty more chances to pile more sanctions on.

Is it worth it after this statement, since he kinda did minimize it, as well as took steps to insulate his family from any lawsuits by "selling" everything to his wife before he died?

"Sexual abuse is reprehensible, especially when it involves children, and no one starting with Joe Paterno condones or minimizes it"

I remember when that first came out and everyone said "He's just an old man preparing for the end, everyone does it."

Makes you look at his final actions from a different perspective now.

The fact that the administration of the school seemed to take these sanctions and say "okay, we'll accept this" means everyone needs to STFU. It's done. The folks at the university know they are getting what was brought on to their program by poor administrators and they are ready to deal with it and move on. Hopefully everyone else can follow suit.

What part of "keep a low profile and maybe you'll get something resembling a life back" do you fail to comprehend?

Listen up, Jay, Freeh had a dated e-mail sent from Curley regarding his discussion with your Dad and how your Dad convinced him it would be "more humane" to not report Sandusky to the authorities.

Face it, it was really "more humane" to keep the football program out of a scandal and let kids continue to be raped.

Freeh isn't exactly a "hack" and would not put something into the report that explosive without compelling evidence.

Nah, I think they're entering the "making a public defense in anticipation of lawsuits" phase. Most families would likely have quieted down by now but they likely hope to gather some public support for Paterno before the civil trials begin.
