Garbageman trifecta?

I haven't RTFA yet, but I'm not holding my breath that someone who hasn't become anything in life other than a garbageman will have, shall we say, haute taste. I'm picturing the paintings one might see in a Motel 6 room mixed with lobby paintings from McDonalds. Oh, and sports logos. Lots of sports logos.

Some of that stuff was pretty cool. When his little space gets too cluttered, he should have a auction and donate the money to his favorite charity.

Sure, there's lots of money to be had in waste management. There's not much money to be had as a garbageman though. There's also lots of money to be had as a bank CEO, but there's not much to be had as the janitor who cleans the CEO's toilet (which is pretty much the same thing as a garbageman, at least on the scale of intelligence and motivation).

The point I was making was that someone who never rises up and actually makes something of himself in life is most likely not someone who is smart enough to actually have an interest in art beyond his favorite sport's team logo plastered everywhere. Whether the $8 an hour he gets paid comes from a public or private coffer is immaterial (although we have private garbage collection where I live, so you were even wrong about that).

People don't get into a career in garbage collection because they decided to turn down a career in medicine, law, or anything else respectable for that matter. All you guys talking about "menial jobs". This dude is the work partner of my co-worker's father. They are in the sanitation union and I've heard stories for years about how good they have it (pay, benefits, and easy work). To the point that my friend has been trying to leave his corporate job with me and get into the union. And I'm jealous.

Supposedly there is some cool stuff (we may head over one day to see it) coming from some very rich neighborhoods.

I try not to dis any job. There's ups and downs to nearly all of 'em. If you only analyze pay, well, that's only a small portion of it.

Me, I work for 11 an hour as a security guy. Overnight. This means.... I can do whatever I want, and I get paid 11 an hour to do it. I could probably (with some training) get a job as a tech guy for like 16 an hour to start, but... I'd rather not.

Where the F do you get off saying this man hasn't "made something of himself"? Good, honest work, raising a family, seeing your kids through college (six in his case!), these are things that we all strive for and things I respect. You don't have to be a white collar worker to have "made it", and you don't have to be an org chart climber to be successful. You need a worldview readjustment because based on the little you've revealed about yourself, and the little we've read about the this garbage man, he sounds like a man of greater character than yourself.

lol yes, 12 years in med school is the worlds most intelligent decision, and lawyers sure are gainfully employed and well respected these days.

Garbagemen in a lot of cities get paid fairly well, they follow government pay structure with government benefits ie health, pension, retire early, etc. Its hazmat and requires special licensing to drive the trucks etc.

Hell, the effort vs reward is actually somewhat remarkable, so long as you're intelligent enough to use perspective when you form opinions about things.

It has nothing to do with how smart you are, it has to do with whether or not you enjoy what you're doing. The man making $8 an hour who loves what he does is infinitely smarter than the one working for $50 an hour and living in a mansion that hates his job.

My housie's a heavy equipment operator. He got a job offer as a big boss making three times the money, and he jumped on it... and after two weeks ripped the shirt and tie off and went right back to his former position making 1/3 the money as an equipment operator. (The boys where he was boss still call him "Two Weeks" because of this.) He was certainly capable of it and they loved him for the two weeks he was 'big man on campus', but the fact is he realized nearly immediately that he was miserable and it was only going to get worse.

I'd go back to my former job making $10.62 an hour slinging garbage and cleaning bathrooms and dealing with beach patrons and their dumb questions if I had the option. I've got a cushy desk job making more than twice that now. I don't hate what I do, but I'm blue collar by nature and this white collar stuff doesn't agree with me. Some of us are just like that. Chances are that our garbageman art lover is of the same mind.

Having kids you can't afford, using public assistance (probably) to get by while raising them because you aren't smart or talented enough to get a real job to support all those kids, and then sending them to (I'm guessing public) college while using financial assistance (my tax dollars) even though they shouldn't waste their time with college since they'll all become garbage collectors, is hardly a legacy. Not to mention that with making little money and having six kids he probably got all of his taxes and then some back, so he's not even contributing anything at all.
