Know what would get viewers back?

Journalism.

Get actual fourth-estate journalists. Young and hungry and full of integrity and not partisan prattle.

Someone who won't just write down what they get in a press release, someone who will do good old-fashioned fact checking.

That'd be unique.

THAT can save CNN.

While that sounds nice, the fall of CNN began when they started getting rid of their "Screaming talking heads" shows, after Stewart skewered them. They tried to replace them with reasonable shows, then eventually moved on to holograms and fatuous people, who, again, weren't supposed to scream.

If journalism were what sells, FoxNews would not consistently demolish everyone in the ratings. The key to ratings it to make your news program as extravagant and 1 sided as possible across the board.

The only thing that will save CNN is the election of Mitt Romney.

I guess, with the urbanization of America, there just isn't much call for a Country News Network these days...

I would watch Robin Meade read the phone book. Especially if she were in a bikini.

that sounds like a lot of work. they could instead compete with Fox News over the crazy and hire Glenn Beck and Alex Jones full time

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU CONSTANTLY SUCK ASS

Allow me to demonstrate: "Now in media news, CNN at all time low in ratings. We'll have a closer look at those numbers, but first we'd like to hear what you think about this. Send us a Twitter tweet and tell us what story you'd like to hear, and if you have an iReport just send it to our Youtube channel. We're checking Facebook now for what YOU have to say about this, but first let's read some of those tweets we promised. For the love of god JUST TELL US HOW YOU THINK WE'RE DOING AND WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING NEXT, WE'RE F*CKING CLUELESS HERE"

Glenn Beck was with CNN before Fox.

They went from one extreme to the other: constant yelling to mindless pablum.

Why not a compromise. Serious journalists giving quality, in-depth reporting and conducting intelligent fact-driven interviews while wearing lingerie. If not that, then just have a window in the corner of the screen constantly playing women having tickle/pillow fights.

I'd watch.

Tough call. Fox News' screaming heads blow every other show out of the water, nightly.

But 60 minutes is still one of the most popular shows out there.

I guess CNN should maybe at least *try* your approach.

CNN is taking the easy road by trying to be Fox-lite and then they wonder why their ratings suck. CNN is probably stuck in that if they change up their reporting (by being more honest and less douchebaggy) to try to get better ratings, their advertisers will leave.

Agreed. Why should I watch a news network that is 45% gossip, 50% opinions and 5% news?

Let's see...CNN: "Let's not show news, and pretend to be even-handed, and have bimbos for hosts."

Yep, just keep on keeping-on CNN, and continue to flail.

So July was down by double digits across the board when compared to July 2011, but up by double digits across the board when compared to just last month. The only thing that tells me is that 24-hour cable news is a volatile market.

CNN is basically what would happen if Lolcats ran a news network. I'm surprised they don't use black bordered, white filled Impact font to caption things. It can't be that long until they have a "Meme of the Week" segment, or maybe just an entire half hour for showing YouTube videos of babies and cats.

CNN tried to copy the Fox News formula from a left-wing perspective, only to discover that liberals don't like to be thought of as a lowest-common-denominator audience. Now, if they could capture some of the iPhan lightning in a bottle and package it into a news format, maybe they could trick liberals into buying into their line of bullshiat.

Frankly, every liberal I know gets their news from the net, probably on an iphone, and if a news program is even on the menu, it's a local news or PBS/BBC style news hour, with lots of citations and calm-voiced slow-talkers.

I used CNN.com as my primary news source from about 2000 on, because of Fox News's derp and the general perception that MSNBC was trying to copy the formula on the left, which I found insulting even though I agreed with the tilt. CNN.com at least gave me the impression that I was being informed. However, that damn website has been so bad lately...

There is so much user-contributed content on that site that there's hardly any news to speak of. Right now, whoever's in charge of picking their headlines seems to think that a 7-11 clerk flipping off a customer is newsworthy, as well as Playboy's first Indian playmate and Time Magazine's 10 most interesting hotel rooms. Some days, half the page is given over to iReports and viral videos. "Look at the puppy." You know, the week of the Olympics, blackouts in India leaving the equivalent population of the United States in the dark, and the biggest drought in sixty years. If I wanted to get my news from Digg, I would. My newspaper does a better job and throws in "Get Fuzzy" for free.

We don't just need better reporting, we need longer news cycles and an end to this obsession with being able to yell "FIRST!!" You can have immediacy or depth, media...you can't have both. It might also be useful to abandon this desperate illusion of "balance." Not every story has "sides," and if the other "side" you're expected to present is total clownshoes, you're under no obligation to report it, just as you're under no obligation to report on anything else you can't verify. I read some unapologetically slanted news sources that nevertheless give me decent information. I call them "slanted" because they do to people like Steve King and Michele Bachmann what people like that deserve - people who point and laugh at them. There was a time when reporters LOVED to nail charlatans like them to the wall.
