NYC's water is good, the reservoirs aren't located in a Bronx dumpster or anything. That said, I can get it from a tap, good sirs.

It is so trendy that after being open for about four weeks, I wouldn't be surprised for it not seeing 2013.

However different cities treat and deliver tap water differently which impacts the taste of the product. I simply don't like the taste of NYC tap water (at least in Manhattan) nor the tap water in the suburb I'm currently working in (which sources its water from wells). I do love the tap water in Minneapolis which is sourced from the Mississippi river.

But really - "pure NYC drinking water" is laughable because when you think of NYC - you don't think clean or pure. The advertisement is ironic regardless of the quality of the product.

Agreed. Although I grew up on well water from the last house, on the end of the last gravel road, on the edge of forest service land next to Mt. Rainier - doesn't get much more pure than that, other than spring water in Iceland or glacial melt in Alaska. New Yorkers shouldn't be so smug about drinking reservoir water downwind of most of the nation's air pollution.

City of Houston's biggest problem is the radioactivity of its water. At first, that sounds terrible, but then you realize - if the biggest problem with this water is that it will raise background radioactivity a negligible amount, you have nothing to worry about.

I don't want chemicals (other than the obvious dihydrogen monoxide and a bit of calcium carbonate to control the pH) in my water. I tolerate some residual chlorine because I also don't want too many living critters in my water, but ozone/UV is much nicer than chlorine as a primary treatment method. The stuff coming out of your tap shouldn't smell like a swimming pool.

And speaking of living critters, I thought it was the copepods that gave NYC water its trademark taste. You'd lose those with a reverse-osmosis filter.

The EPA wants a certain chlorine ressidual in the water at the farthest extent of the system. So, chlorine is added, regardless of what other 'treatment' (And I use the term lightly - Ozone and UV systems aren't worth a sack of shiat) is used. It doesn't matter WHERE the water comes from, it's got chlorine added to it.

Most of what people biatch about is natural minerals in the water, anyway.

I have to agree with that assessment.

My tap water is very close to distilled. The only element in it, besides H2O, is a little copper from the pumping system. It's so pure, I have to add minerals to it when I brew beer.

New York water comes from aquifers in the Catskills. That's about as unspoiled wilderness as you're gonna get up in the Northeast. And it does taste really good. It has minerals, though, but it's not especially 'hard'.

Saratoga Springs water is so hard it's a marketing angle. You can walk around town testing all the public springs tasting each type. Boy do they have a taste. If NYC tap water were beer, Saratoga Springs water is the bitterest IPA you've ever had.

Tap water where I used to live in the Southern part of the country was so bad you could smell it from a metre away. It tasted like diluted tylenol syrup mixed with fake-sugar aftertaste.

+1 for the quality of NYC's water, and for the northeast in general. It's silly in this area to pay for a plastic bottle full of water that tastes exactly, if not slightly worse, than your own tap water.

Most water across the U.S.A. bottled and otherwise tastes decent to me, yet there are always those towns with the nastiest city water. It's usually some industrial-heavy "suburb".

You've never lived in Ohio. The water's been polluted with petroleum-based fertilizers, beef industry antibiotics & hormones and corn pesticide runoff well before fracking made the stuff downright undrinkable. City water's OK but god help you if you use a well. Big Agri is big.

I know what you mean, but I don't know if "pure" is the right word. Western Washington water is anything but pure. Rather, it's the closest stuff to what humans evolved to drink -- the natural filtration processes remove all the bad stuff and add a perfect balance of yummy minerals. Distilled water is darn close to pure, but that's also why it tastes like crap. It also really really wants to dissolve something, which is why it tends to taste like whatever it's stored in.

I think their reservoir has little to do with the quality; it's a heavily polluted area. "Dirty Jobs" gave a rational explanation; much of the city still uses old-fashioned wooden roof tanks. The intake pipe sticks up several inches from the bottom. Light inorganic particulates tend to float while heavy stuff sinks below the intake, and the wooden surface causes organics to adhere to its surface. The inside gets quite disgusting but the water itself winds up filtered just before it reaches the tap.

Our water is actually quite good, thank you very much. I use a filter, but that's because the pipes in my own 100-year-old house add more unpleasant flavors than anything before them.

I'd say Boston is better having to serve 4X that many customers while coming in only at #5 (and I think both those counts are low).

The Quabin/Wachusett aqueduct reservoir system is one of the best in the country, and the tons and tons of sand sediment left from glaciers that the ground water runs through first is a natural purifier. Same idea of where Poland Springs water used to come from.

I live in NYC. The water here is excellent. I always wonder why people pay for bottled water here. I buy one bottle and then just refill it from the tap. It tastes excellent. Sometimes, in different buildings, the water tastes different because of the pipes. Generally, though, I prefer New York City water to most other places I have been to in the country. Also I went to college in New Jersey. The water in Jersey was awful. I used to get stomach aches from going back and forth drinking the water in New York and then Jersey. I asked a friend who lived there why the water was not good. Apparently, the majority of the water in Jersey comes from wells, where t is treated heavily; and there has been heavy industry in Jersey for many years which didn't help water quality. The water in New York come from the Adirondacks upstate which is just hundreds of miles of untouched wilderness. It is then funneled through a long tunnel called the aqueduct (see Die Hard With A Vengeance) down to New York City.

I did live in China. The water there was tough to drink. Bottled water there was necesaary.
