Hey, remember a month into the season when Derek Lowe was 6-1, had an ERA barely over 2 and was talked about as a possible CPotY? Well, in the 3 months since, he's 2-9 with an ERA of 6.94 and is about to be removed from the Indians rotation

Big deal. As a Giants fan, I have no sympathy, given that our "ace" is a back-to-back Cy Young Award winner who, after finally winning last night, now has a 5-11 record and has lowered his ERA to a 5.62 (now third-worst ERA in the NL, as compared to dead last in ERA that as he's been most of the season).

There was a big "wtf is with Tim Lincecum" discussion here a month ago, that brought in all sorts of sabermetrics, pitchfx, and other advanced tools. Everyone more or less agreed that he's been unlucky since his stuff was still as good as it ever was.

After watching last night's game, there's a pretty simple conclusion: Lincecum has no farking clue where his pitches are going.

The Indians are simply a bad team. There are way too many holes to fill. Their win/loss record is really inflated given that they've scored 71 fewer runs than they've allowed but are only 3 games under .500.

We've got a great core in Cabera/Kipnis/Brantley/Santana/Choo, Smith, Pestano and Perez are great in the pen but this season depended on the starting rotation pitching to their ability and, unfortunately, they've actually regressed. Masterson has been maddeningly inconsistent, Tomlin's fallen apart and Ubaldo is Ubaldo. McAllister has been a great surprise, but it takes more than one consistent starting pitcher to win ballgames and we just don't have it right now. The hole in left field wasn't properly addressed and the holes we thought we'd filled at first and third ended up almost as bad as left field after Chisenhall broke his arm and Kotchman's BA dropped about 70 points.

It's been an incredibly frustrating season. We could still be in it if the front office had addressed some glaring problems earlier in the season (The Red Sox wanted Tomlin for Youkilis and our FO wouldn't pull the trigger, Willingham isn't here because they wouldn't give him a 3 year deal) but instead they waited until the wheels had completely come off and then used that as an excuse for going inactive at the trade deadline.

Well the Tigers have underperformed even worse and the only trade made has been a total bust so far. It's becoming painful to watch every night. They seem to start playing well and then go right back into the tank.

At least the Tigers, while maybe not well managed by the front office, aren't horrible mismanaged to the point of actually making things worse.

No, I actually can't complain too much about the Tigers front office. This trade doesn't look good so far but Dombrowski has a pretty good track record. Nobody would have predicted that half the lineup would suddenly start to suck.

I lived through the previous Tigers regime that led up to the 43-119 season in 2003, so I understand your frustration. That was the definition of incompetence.

Dare I say we should have had a fire sale sans Kipnis/Santana/Brantley? We could have flipped Choo for 2 excellent prospects, Asdrubal for even more (I know, blasphemy. More on this is a second), and Perez to a team desperate for a closer/bullpen help. I bet we could have dealt Masterson for a promising arm, and sombody out there has to be thinking "I can fix Ubaldo".

In regards to Asdrubal, if the sale took place, we would have had to endure another 2 years of crappy baseball until our prospect haul gets acclimated. By then, a kid named Francisco Lindor will be ready for the big time and he is basically Asdrubal with a tad more power.

Here's all you really need to know about Timmy. When the Giants visited Atlanta a couple weeks ago, the temperature was in the 90's at game time, and Timmy was wearing a hooded sweatshirt -- with the hood pulled over his head.

The guy is a freak of nature and has a ridiculous amount of talent. But when you're player is acting like a crackhead, You should expect things like this to happen.

If he was pitching like he had in his first couple years, you guys would be running away with the division. Instead, my offensively-challenged team (even with Kemp and Ethier back) are still in the runnings. Now I'm going to go cry since we got swept by the D-bags and are about to fall to third place...

To be fair, the Damon signing was well after Willingham was off the market. The reason the Indians didn't sign Willingham was that he was 33 and demanding a 3 year contract. And, they at the time were relying on Grady to be an OF, so Willingham was being looked at for 1B, not a good defensive position for him. They expected, I guess, to sign Carlos Pena or grab Carlos Lee in a trade instead. Kotchman and Damon were last-choice options, but they were still upgrades over what would have been there otherwise (LaPorta at 1B, Cunningham/Duncan in LF).

Not signing Willingham looks awful in retrospect. And they probably should have taken a gamble on Youk instead of writing him off as old and damaged. But even if they did BOTH of those things, they'd still be in a bad spot. There isn't a single pitcher in our rotation who can be counted on. Ubaldo and Masterson have been completely inconsistent. Tomlin and Lowe have been awful. McAllister is too inexperienced to have a whole lot of stock put in him. In addition, our supposed best hitter, Carlos Santana, has been woeful in the power department until recently. They can win with Santana hitting .250 as long as he has a high OBP and a high slugging. He right now has the OBP, but his ISO is 60 points down.

Indians fans love to rail against management and ownership as much as possible. But the fact is that nobody in the starting rotation is playing up to par aside from McAllister (and he's only been doing it for a month or so). There isn't a major league team out there that can survive that and compete.

That has nothing to do with his era now exploding, lowe is good for about 10-15 starts a year, after that his shiat stops dropping and he leaves the ball up in the strike zone which leads to tape measure HRs.

And if the Indians had ponied up an extra $700K when they drafted him out of high school, he could have pitched in Cleveland - which also means that the Indians could have become the first team in major league history to trade away THREE straight Cy Young Award winners.

Search the old Fark threads there was one talking about how great a season Lowe was having and mocking Atlanta for giving him up and paying for some of his salary.

Honestly wouldn't be surprised to see it go to Zito. Best ERA since he's been a Giant.

Never mind that his ERA+ is just 90 (3rd worst with the Giants), or that his FIP is a full point higher than his ERA, or that he's worth .1 fWAR, or .3 rWAR or that it's his worst K/9 ever....
