250000 is about 4 times the median income in NYC, the highest median in the US. If you make more than that you do not need a tax cut. End of line. |

Mighty Taternuts: 250000 is about 4 times the median income in NYC, the highest median in the US. If you make more than that you do not need a tax cut. End of line. I like the use of NYC as the standard. It pre-empts "b-b-b-but costs of living" arguments. |

So the Republicans ask for an up/down vote in the Senate and get it. The 'Bush Tax cuts' minus the $250,000+ portion pass. They've got it right there in their hands in the House. A plan to cut taxes on almost everyone but a few people and they can all put their names on it. And those few people are going to vote for them anyway. And they shiat the bed and vote it down so they'll go up for everyone after the end of the year. IN AN ELECTION YEAR when their mantra is 'cut taxes cut taxes cut taxes.' Great farking job GOP. |

It's a win-win for them. If they get the tax cuts extended for the rich it's a win. And if they don't do anything then the tax cuts expire for everyone and they can say "Obama raised your taxes!" |

It's just that the people making over $250,000 don't get any additional cuts. Their first quarter million will end up getting taxed at a lower rate, same as everyone elses. |

This is fantastic. All they have to do is continue being unable to get anything done on this issue, and most of the country's financial problems are solved, just like that. For once, Congressional incompetence and partisanship might actually do some good. |

Evil Twin Skippy: Has the GOP turned into the party of Nero? Not quite, if you do like Nero and burn everything, then there are no assets, equipment or capital to be profited on afterwards. The republicans want to ruin this country, then sell what is leftover to China for a nice profit. Slight difference. /also, no self-respecting republican would be caught dead with a fiddle. |

Pincy: It's a win-win for them. If they get the tax cuts extended for the rich it's a win. And if they don't do anything then the tax cuts expire for everyone and they can say "Obama raised your taxes!" You're assuming they win the messaging on this whole thing...which maybe they will. But right now they most certainly are not. Obama has Romney completely on defense regarding taxes, and if the party standard bearer is on defense in a Presidential election year, then the entire party is. Obama (and the Dems) are going to have an awful lot of opportunities between now and the end of the year to talk about the votes last week and this week and they've become very good at doing so. The GOP will have to rely on Romney and his campaign staff by and large to convey their message....and that's not exactly been a winner thus far. If you want to talk about win/win: The House could have gone ahead and passed the Senate plan....then where the fark would Obama be? As evidenced yesterday the Obama campaign is going to pummel Romney and the GOP on this, and if they had passed it they would have taken a ton of the punch out of Obama's arguments while at the same time passing only a marginal increase on their rich overlords... and spun that last point into "Look at what fartbongo is making us do to our job creators!!" A small price to pay if it increases Romney's chances in November. |

"Normally, you don't raise taxes in a recession, which is why we haven't and why we've instead cut taxes. So I guess what I'd say to Scott is - his economics are right. You don't raise taxes in a recession. We haven't raised taxes in a recession." - 2009 Obama would like a word with 2012 Obama. |

You think we're much better off than being in a recession? Unemployment is about to jump up again according to Gallup and even Obama's folks are telling us it's going to get worse this next year. Now we're being warned that if we do slip into a double-dip recession the main reason will likely be unemployment. So the answer to generating more tax revenue is getting people back to work. Raising taxes is going to act against that. |

The last 30 years of tax cuts have not succeeded in creating any sort of sustained economic growth; why should we believe that they will this time? |

Hey if you have a problem with Obama's opinion on the matter then take it up with him. Also, while you're at it, ask him why he changed his stance in order to play the class warfare card so he could distract people from the fact that nothing he's done has improved the economy. |

John McCain suspending his 2008 campaign for a week or so because the economy sucked so hard; I haven't seen any hints of Romney doing that in 2012. |

So letting a temporary tax cut expire is raising taxes? I guess when a store has a sale and it's over they are raising prices? |

For the record, I don't see Romney being any better for the economy. Though I think it's preferable to have him in there at this point because I don't know he'll fail whereas we've all seen Obama fail already. I won't be voting for either one of them though. |

Obama has boosted economic growth 9% since he took office. What was Bush's record? Slashing it by 10%? |
