| MaxxLarge I've seen these atomic-bomb test videos before, and I've always wondered something... Bus - Ka-PHOOM. Trees - WHISSSHHHH. House - KRAK-PSHHHH. How did they keep the cameras intact and operational enough to get that footage? |

Why don't they just post the whole Trinity and Beyond movie.... //I guess the RIAA would probably nuke them though... |

How did they keep the cameras intact and operational enough to get that footage? They are farther away than the targets placed in the predicted blast zone. The maximum blast radius of most weapons can be fairly accurately predicted. |

Does any one know what caused all of those verticle contrails to the right of the explosion? |

Warmachine999: Does any one know what caused all of those verticle contrails to the right of the explosion? I believe they were small rockets, sent up just before the detonation, to leave contrails. The subsequent distortion to the contrails would show how the air reacted to the blast. If I'm wrong, please let me know. Lots of heavy manipulation of the sound (and timing) of that test. I wonder what it actually sounded and looked like. |

Thank you Tillmaster and AngryPoet for the almost simulpost answer. I believe you are both correct, and as such get an internet cookie. |

Warmachine999: Does any one know what caused all of those verticle contrails to the right of the explosion? Those are rocket trails. The smoke rockets are launched just before detonation. The trails are used to help visually measure the scale of the blast. You'll see them in most tests from this era. In some videos, you can see them being launched before the blast. |

Yes, the nuke cannon existed. No it did not fire anything remotely large enough to cause 90% of the effects shown in that video. The vehicles, trees, and houses were stock footage from completely unrelated tests. |

My big brother was a forward observer for a howitzer battery, stationed in Germany in the late '50s Supposedly, they had tactical nuclear shells , W-33s, for use in case "the balloon went up." |

The soft fleshy terrorists are above ground. This is a nuclear thread, you do the math. /In WW2 we didn't even lose a nights sleep if we torched a hundred thousand people in one go. /Wars get real expensive when you go out of your way to be nice. |

This was a 15kT detonation and detonated 6.25 miles from the gun it was fired from. |

Question for those of you who took more physics classes than I did. On the right, multiple vertical bars of clouds appear. WTF? I've seen that in a few Nuke test videos what is that? Also, how do they stay there? Isn't there a lot of wind/blast wave going on? |

OnlyM3 Question for those of you who took more physics classes than I did. On the right, multiple vertical bars of clouds appear. WTF? I've seen that in a few Nuke test videos what is that? Sounding rockets. They leave the smoke trails so the blast wave can be observed in the air. Knowing where the wave is in relation to the detonation time helps determine the bomb yield. Also, how do they stay there? Isn't there a lot of wind/blast wave going on? They test on a calm day. The rockets are fired just seconds before detonation. The trails are only needed to see the shockwave, which is gone seconds later. |

| Cerebral Knievel Xai: This was a 15kT detonation and detonated 6.25 miles from the gun it was fired from. Which placed the gun and its operators well withen the effective blast radius of the weapon. The biggest thing they learned from that test was that shooting a nuke from a cannon wasn't very practical. But we didn't need to tell the commies that. |

| BEER_ME_in_CT Xai: This was a 15kT detonation and detonated 6.25 miles from the gun it was fired from. Wouldnt that be very bad for the gun crew? |

| Cerebral Knievel BEER_ME_in_CT: Xai: This was a 15kT detonation and detonated 6.25 miles from the gun it was fired from. Wouldnt that be very bad for the gun crew? yes, hence my comment right over top of yours. I think they built 3 such artillery pieces, and one of them is on display in Newport News Virginia, not to far away from me and one of these days I need to go out and visit it. AFAIK, even though the gun was proven to not to be practical because of its' short range. they allowed the test footage to persist for the sake of propaganda. Just because we didn't have doesn't necessarily mean that the enemy needs to know that, and it's probably better that they did think we had it. We were in a nuclear war back then... all sides were testing their devices in a giant dick waggling contest of escalation. no one dared actually drop the things on the other guy less we let loose a full blown nuclear conflict. all the testing proved to everybody, including the plowshare tests, which were really just secondary excuses to set off the devices was that they were wildly impractical for anything except making big booms. |

I doubt the army would care that much, this test was a milestone in atomic testing because it shook up the attitude of how nuclear warheads were used and resulted in the megaton-era bombs becoming the multi-kiloton multi-warhead missiles of today. |

The vehicles, trees, and houses were stock footage from completely unrelated tests. While the video footage may be from another test (there seems to be some confusion about that), that's almost immaterial. As Studebaker Hoch has pointed out, the device in Upshot Knothole Grable was about as powerful as Little Boy, and that seemed to cause some similar effects. The threshold for the blast to destroy conventional buildings is about 5psi. |

studebaker hoch Smartest Funniest ![]() Really? I know they tested on calm days, but those seem to last and stay stationary as the main cloud spreads. |
