| Mentat Elandriel: Wow, link crashes my crappy browser at work. Maybe someone will be kind enough to post a synopsis? == At the outset of his campaign, Romney tried to avoid committing himself, but by February, with GOP rivals outflanking him and facing steady pressure from Republican elites, he declared himself in favor of a 20 percent tax cut, a move greeted with joy from anti-tax activists. But he still attempted to hide the ball. Romney promised that his rate cut would be matched by closing tax deductions and some unspecified allowance for economic growth, and thus would not decrease the level (or the share) of taxes paid by the rich. Romney's boast that his plan could not be scored revealed the essential calculation. But the campaign miscalculated. Yesterday's study by the Brookings Institution and the Tax Policy Center showed that, even allowing for the faster growth predicted by Romney's own economist, there aren't enough tax deductions to account for the cost of the lower rates for the rich - raising taxes for the middle class would be the only way to make Romney's promises add up. Romney didn't hide the ball well enough. |

This seems a little too wonky to sway most Americans. They'll just fall back on their emotional reactions and beliefs about taxes. The real killer could be if he releases his taxes all the way back to 2000. If Harry Reid's irresponsible speculation turns out to be true, that's it. It's all over. Americans might not understand the tax code. But they understand that a guy making zillions and paying 0% or less is clearly a villain. |

The emperor was a murderous thug who ultimately had good intentions but who failed to put down a pack of relentlessly incompetent opponents who he should have smoked in about a week and ended up making the situation far worse. Immediate, a pretty good metaphor for the Democrats all around, actually. |

fusillade762: How do you reconcile "ZOMG THE DEFICIT!!!" with "ZOMG NO TAX INCREASES!!!"? By making the federal government into an old-age and health insurance company with its own military. Duh. In all seriousness, Paul Ryan's budget literally would destroy the entire federal government outside of DOD, Social Security, and Medicare/Medicaid/whatever other health care programs there are. |

I love the ad. Especially the part where Romney steps off a plane with another plane marked Trump in the background. FishyFred: This seems a little too wonky to sway most Americans. If Harry Reid's irresponsible speculation turns out to be true, that's it. It's all over. Americans might not understand the tax code. But they understand that a guy making zillions and paying 0% or less is clearly a villain. It's fairly obvious that Romney has determined that releasing his tax info is more damaging than not releasing it. I'm guessing that Romney did whatever he could to pay as little tax as possible. Perhaps it was zero, perhaps it was below or slightly above zero. It's not going to sell well with the middle class that he wants to raise taxes on. |

obama's tax trap? really? you think this is what has happened lately? you think the Democrats have ever won on taxes? obama and pelosi agree that the tax hikes for 99% of the population are verboten. pelosi won't think about them for anyone making less than one million a year. you can't even run your great society programs with present funding, never mind meeting future increased liabilities. you can't run programs created in 1969 with present revenues. and since democrats are unwilling to raise taxes on 99% of the population, they're raison d'etre (increased government spending for a better society) is essentially impossible to even attempt to implement. at it's heart that is why obamacare is such a piece of shiat. he was terrified of increasing the taxes necessary to run a well thought out program of reform and coverage. the middle class doesn't taxes if they have the generic house and the 2.1 kids. you will never fund any great government project that gets your panties wet again. grover norquist's made the democrat party his biatch. don't ever forget it when you bemoan the lack of inspiring anything coming out of government. |

If they want to make it really easy for Obama, well... hats off to them. Yeah, that's the thing, people keep talking (and by "people keep talking" I mean, in most cases, "Republicans keep sniveling") about all of these horrible traps the Dems in general and Fartfarta in particular keep leaving. The problem is, they're not traps. It's just flat, level ground that the Repubs need to just walk across like normal farking people without shiatting themselves or tripping over their own feet or dropping their pants and masturbating furiously in the middle of the street. Of course, if they could do that, they wouldn't be Republicans. |
